Challenge: What the Heck is It?



First off, big thanks to Buggin for the wind challenge.  Everyone did a fantastic job interpreting the challenge in their own unique way.  I hope to see just as great results in my challenge.

I have to say I didn't really come up with the idea, I'll admit it.  Classy presented this at flickr back a couple months ago and when I saw a link last week for photographic games involving the same guidelines, I figured it might be fun here too.  I thought about doing something more traditional but I'm hoping this will be fun for both the artist and the viewer and will get people commenting.

That being said, I'm challenging you guys to go out, get up close and personal and ask us (the viewers) What the Heck is It?!? 

Take the macro out and distort reality.  Or use a long telephoto and an odd angle to make something big, unusual.  Try not to use anything obscure that people won't even know what it is, but everyday objects looked at in a new light. 

The rules:  Let people guess (that means GUESS PEOPLE).  Don't give it away in the story.  If it can't be guessed after a day, give a hint.  Try and post a picture of the object in the comments after it's been guessed (or no one can figure it out).  Participate and review stories often for the unveiling of the object. Please limit Photoshop work to cropping and exposure. And lastly, HAVE FUN!

  • Don't worry, pw.  If you can't guess 'em, maybe you can stump people yourself!  Everything I took a picture of was from inside the house.  The only exception is the one shot I didn't use a macro for (to show it could be done without one) and that's the unusual shot.

    The = some kind of basket.  This sounds like fun, but I'm terrible at "seeing" close up.   I didn't even try when Classy posted on flicker.  Good examples, tho.

    hint looks like the reverse side of a piece of clothing showing the button backings. 

     

    Interesting ideas!  I'll have to make an effort and see what I can come up with!

  • Alright, I'm at work so I can't upload the full scale images of the ones guessed right.  BUT......

     LEB & Old Shot, unusual is my car's dirty rim

    Old Shot also got the right as being a cage for a fan (and Mr. Q got distort reality as the bottom of my shoe).  And the other two are good guesses but not right.

    Also, way to go cratchet!  Is is a burnt candle wick.

    That leaves... 5 more left to guess!  Can't wait to start guessing on other's shots.

    What has me stumped...looks like looking in a hole of something with a blade in it.

    Heck is a felt tip pen or a paint pen

    It has me stumpe too...amber glass bowl

  • Hey ashton... you don't know how close you are with that description on what.  Try thinking of school supplies with that description.

    Heck is a fingernail paint brush.  I'll give it to you since you said paint

    And you got hint as well.  The traveling curd will make an apperance on photographica (as soon as some slideshow issues are solved).

    hints: It you find and use in the kitchen.  ALOT.  Mostly while cooking.
    Everyday objects you also find in the kitchen and it useful when you're parched (Mr. Q was close to the answer for this one when he guessed at It.)

    With that, we have three left and then my questions to you are answered.  I'll try and get the full-scale photos on tonight or tomorrow night.  Everyone's been participating very well and I thank you for it.

  • Woo hoo!  You got the two (and it's a drinking glass with fresh cool pink lemonade in it.  Which I drank after taking a picture of it). 

    Ok, last hint on It:  It's used IN cooking and it's liquid and found in different varieties although all the same color and all used to do the same thing.
