Challenge: Reflections

Thank you Tomitake for passing the baton off to me on the challenge. We've seen some great shots the last two weeks!!

I'm going to go for something a little different this time around. Let's work on reflections. I don't mean reflecting on the past but making a reflection an interesting part of your photograph. Most of the time we don't want reflections and use filters to try and get rid of them. There are cases however that they can add to or make a photo.

If you look around you will see reflections in windows, mirrors, glass and water to name a few. The trick is to make them interesting and fit in as part of the image. To make this work you will have to really study your composition and you will also have to work on your focus point. Do you want the item being reflected in focus or the actual subject in focus? It can make a difference depending on what you are shooting, what all you are including in the shot and on the f-stop you are using and your DOF.

Please... no photos of you standing in front of a mirror showing you and your camera taking a photo of yourself.

Something else I would like to see this time is a real effort by photographers to only post their best shots. Take lots of them but do some thinning. Maybe the first week post your beginning efforts and week two post a batch showing improved versions or better ideas. Have fun with it but don't make it the only thing you shoot and post for the next two weeks.

A few reflection examples... Popup LinkStill on reflective base, Popup LinkReflection on a pond, Popup LinkBoats in the bay, Popup LinkSeen in a hub cap and Popup LinkIn the bedroom mirror. Look around. You will come up with your own ideas. Try and be creative. It's good for you.

I seem to remember when the challenges started there was a rule that it was "new" images only and not out of your stock. Let's go back to that for this time around also.

Excellent idea! (Off stage comment: Now that I have had reflections in my last two posts...grrrr!) I accept your challenge, sir. I shall consult with my friend. I am most certain that we can come up with some good images after "reflecting" on the assignment.

    - Mmmmmm... Multiplicative

  • ClassyShots
LOL... I had that typed up and ready to post yesterday. I wasn't out to get you. Really I wasn't. You got some really nice shots and I'm sure you and your friend can get more.

    - Oh Bull!

  • SaxGuy
HA! That's the way it's been working with me too Pyro! It seems like I post something and if I had waited just ONE MORE DAY, it would have worked for the theme!

  • smalltown05
Pyro, I think I may try and seduce your friend away from you! Why is everyone getting new rigs but me?

    - blow.....hard

  • northstar
I'll have to reflect on this theme for awhile, I think.

    - I'm Special!

  • codepoit
Mike, let me know when you got a person for the next theme, and I will add it to the story, rather than here in the comments... A quick word, if I may: Just pick someone. Don't ask them, don't put out feelers for potential hosts. Just pick someone, and that person is it. If they are really uncomfortable with it, they will tell you, and you can pick someone else. That's the way it should be...or at least, that's the way **I feel it should be...

  • Pyro43
Code, I agree. If you ask for a volunteer, more often than not you wind up empty handed.

    - Mmmmmm... Multiplicative

  • loweho
Me too! I mean I agree.. I wasn't volunteering. Good idea CS. Has me thinking about subjects now that I can't use all my "me standing in front of the mirror" shots.

Great idea! Love the harbor and hub cap shots, by the way. :]

    - right brained...

  • loweho
When I said I wasn't volunteering, I wasn't like trying to use reverse psychology. Now I'm going to have to think... and you know I have went two weeks without a thought before. Has anyone done nude self-portraits yet... Oh, Oh, the wife vetoed that one... she said the gorilla avatar was scary enough. I'll have to think of something she'll let me do. Jeez, the pressure is killing me... I can feel my chest tightening.............
