The St. Louis Zoo had 5 baby tigers born on April 28, 3 girls and 2 boys.  Mom is doing great with them.  I raced to the zoo and I had to fight the crowds of kids and parents since they are only on display for 2 hours a day.  It was pretty tough to take the shots as people were jostling to get to see them.  I am planning a trip later this month, now that the kids are back in school.  I hope it won't be so busy.

SleepingTiger   this one stayed by itself.
FollowtheLeader    4 of them came out of the cave.

What did I do??

By tranquilspirit written 9/9/08 9:09 AM, published 9/9/08 9:09 AM

 Hello Everyone!

Yesterday was a typical Monday at the office, so I decided that I deserved a night off and set off to enter this week's challenge!  So, what did I do for these shots??

I loaded up  hayley_the_farm_dog and then quickly shot a  macro_at_home.  Then we headed off down the sand road to my  favorite_trees_.  Since we were right by our pasture we  checked_our_cows.  Down the road a bit, we also had to put the neighbor's cows in, they thought the grass was greener on the other side of the fence!  Sadly, no time to shoot photos, but the cows got back to their home safely and that is all that matters! Also stopped by to say hi to my_neighbor_s_horse  We traveled down  some_new_dirt_roads.  We did finally run across a great secluded spot, and this is what was there....

As we were  losing_the_light and were down to a  half_a_tank_of_gas ...it was time to call it a night...

Bi-weekly challenge - What did you do?

I got up early, and went out to my favorite lake for an early morning walk; the plans being to capture the sunrise.  As the duck's luck would be, I got out fifteen minutes too late; but being foolish, I started walking anyway.  Along the way i was able to capture this mediocre shot of a Gold finch, also some Grass .  I converted this over to   B/W  (I don't know a thing about B/W.)  So after about two hours of walking and shooting, I get back to the staring point, where I capture this  Rig.  But after shooting this, a couple came up and we started talking about cameras (they were going to jump onto the digital band wagon.)  As I was showing the features of the Oly 520, particularly the live-view, the battery died - just like that.  Thus ended the demonstration.  Turning back to the bike, the person had loaded a replica Eskimo kayak (it would have made a nice human interest story) and was getting ready to take off.  So what I didn't do, was replace the battery and continue shooting.  And now your wondering what the kayak looked like.

Day at the Zoo

Some photos as I walked around the zoo this past Saturday . . .  Who gives a hoot?

I think this is my favorite . . . On Guard . . .

Wish I could have gotten a little more in focus but I think it looks a little like a drawing out of a Harry Potter movie  Looking for dead meat . . .

Colors . . .  I'm Watching . . .

The Flight of Souls

 The Flight of Souls

I had been wanting to take this picture for some time and finally got it last summer.

It is the focal point of Wade Chapel in Lakeview Cemetary in Cleveland, OH, which was decorated by Louis Comfort Tiffany. I'm not much for Christian superstition, but it is a gorgeous piece of art near where I live.

I was there with some out of town friends and without a tripod. I just sat on the floor with my camera wedged on my camera bag. I couldn't view through the lens, so I just did several slow exposures and checked the alignment until I got the whole window nearly filling the frame and reasonably centered.

Of course the perspective left a little to be desired, so I later corrected it with a linear transformation in Gimp -- kind of a poor man's shift lens.

Challenge: what did you do to get the shot?

By evilsqueendee

from Aug 31, 2008, to Sep 13, 2008

we spent this weekend at the temple harley  party drags. some of the things i saw inspired this challenge...what would do you do to get a photograph?

for instance, i was willing to sit in creaky old wooden bleachers, packed with hot sweaty spectators, next to a hot asphalt racetrack in 100 degree heat and 90% humidity for nearly three hours to take pictures of top fuel drag bikes.

i could taste the smell of the nitro in the air and the roar of the top fuelers was ear- popping thunder. however, patience rewarded me with a  couple of  shots i really liked.

i also had to shoot in a different mode than i was used to, so, i learned a couple of new tricks to using my camera.

as i was sitting there asking myself "why are you here instead of home in the comfort of an air conditioner?" ...i started to notice a lot of photographers , they were .everywhere  (check out the background behind the smoke!)

some were closer  to the action than i was willing to get. i have to admit i had  lens envy when i saw this.

why were they here? what would they do to get their shot, THE one they were looking for. i had to wonder, is it the rush you get when you get just the shot you wanted? something else? i wanted to ask them, but, we were all absorbed in our cameras. looking. waiting. hoping!

so, i was thinking for the challenge you could get out of your comfort zone and shoot something you've never shot before. use a different setting on your camera than you normally do.

shoot a subject you've not tried. try an effect or even a photoshopped creation you just learned how to do. just try something new. get out the book that came with your camera and re-read it.

just remember to be safe, be current, and to tell us what you did to get the shot.

love,

d

thanks to obvious troll for passing the challenge to me. i hope you enjoy it.
