I'm gonna take a stab at the bi-weekly challenge. I don't know if I tagged everything right or not, but I don't have the time to hang around and find out. It stopped raining today and I'm getting out of the house for a while.

Here's a Statue!

Just remembered I took a couple of experimental statue shots in the garden of a hotel we stayed at a couple months back. Not recent I know, but oh well!

I found the statue intriguing, so I tried a little selective DOF. In truth I think the first shot may be better but meh, I likes me DOF!

I had to dig into my archive for these, but I found them.  Shot back in '02 with the old, old Panasonic camera, taken in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, I present some scuptures from the greatest artist of all time:

I'm still learning this new camera that I borrowed, so these may not be very good. Here's my picture

Another one

here's the orginal pics taken #1 statue  Samuel de Champlain (1567–1635) was the 17th-century explorer, geographer and map-maker who founded the city of Quebec in 1608 and in 1613 explored the Ottawa River. This statue was erected to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his second ascent up the Ottawa River at the very location where he would have made his solar observation during his voyage in 1615.

Champlain certainly knew how to use an astrolabe — an old navigational instrument — but the sculptor did not: Champlain is shown holding it upside down!

here's the #2 statue it sits on top of the National War Monument. You can better pics of it here http://www.stemnet.nf.ca/monuments/on/nationalwar.htm

Designed originally to commemorate the 60,000 Canadians who died in the First World War, the National War Memorial in Confederation Square has since come to commemorate all of Canada's war dead.

In 1982, the bronze numerals, 1939-1945 and 1950-1953 (Korea), were added to honour the fallen in the Second World War and in Korea.

The competition for the memorial's design, announced in 1925, was open to British subjects and to subjects of nations allied with the British Empire during the war. It stipulated that, while the spirit of heroism and self-sacrifice should be commemorated, there should be no attempt to glorify war. Vernon March of Farnborough, Kent, in England, was selected for his concept of "the Great Response of Canada" represented by twenty-two members of the main forces in uniform passing through a granite arch under the guidance of allegorical figures of Peace and Freedom. Delayed for many years by problems of site selection and preparation, as well as by the death of the sculptor (his six brothers and one sister completed the work), the memorial was not officially dedicated until 1939, less than four months before the start of World War II.

Remembrance Day ceremonies are held here annually on November 11.

After reading the comments made here, I feel that I did not do these statues justice. I wanted to join this challenge and I when I took these pics, I did not have the challenge in mind, I took them the same day as my last post.

Better shots next time for sure

I'm not really a collector, but friends have given me these, knowing my love for donkeys and horses:

Arabian

He resembles my last horse, Tson-Tsational.

Donkey
This is my favorite dust catcher - a birthday present from the gang at work (who roll their eyes when they hear the word 'donkey'; too bad for them - it's payback for the 'cute' kid stories I've listened to for years.)

 Little Spotted Ass

I'm not being 'cute' - that's what the 'pinto' donkeys are called.

 Hard Ass

OK, so I'm being cute with this one.

George Washington Carver by Christian Petersen

Sculptured in 1949, Mr. Petersen chose to portray Carver as an older man, contemplating a single peanut.  Originally done in plater, funding could not be found for bronzing.  In 1998 donors supplied the funding for bronzing.  (Thank heavens for university fact sheets!)

Full statue, (69" high)
Converted this one to B/W (for not liking B/W, I sure use it allot)
Detail of statue

(Photographer's note: This was taken early morning, in a dark grove.  Several shots had a blue cast to them, using the flash removed the blue tint, but left hot spots on the subject.  I though this would have been an easy challenge, but it is turning out more difficult than I thought.)

Unique to the Northwest . . . .

When a retired Navy man down the street needed to remove a large evergreen tree from his small front yard, he cut it down, leaving about 10 feet of the trunk, called in a chain saw carver, and ended up with this unique work of art - all one piece - an American Eagle, atop a stump, with a salmon in his talons.

(not the best angles to show it off - but there was very little yard, a deep ditch, and then a busy street, so I took what I could get)

I really liked this challenge. I have posted two full frame shots of a small figurine and two stutues from my latest trip to Paris.

I'm still learning the idiosyncrasies of my new dSLR, so it was a great opportunity to learn about mirror lock up even when on the tripod. Missed a number of exposures before I figured out that I should lock up the mirror on the close-ups.

Boarder Crossing by Luis Jimenez (1989)

This statue depicts the artist's grandfather, wife, and son crossing a river seeking a better life.  Constructed of fiberglass with a urethane finish.

(Photographer's note:  I found this one hard to photograph.  While the image focus in ok, things don't look as sharp as I would like,  I think because of the shinny urethane finish.)

I was in Maryland last week, visiting a friend. We had a lot of fun, and I took about 300 pictures. Here are eight patriotic pictures I took in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

*For 'inside of a canon', I stuck my lens in the canon mouth, turned up the f-stop, and switched it to manual focus because auto didn't want to work.

Figurines or Figures??!

Good morning, everyone. In  my house, there is a distinctive lack of statues/figurines. So, I took a little creative liscence and dug out some of my old action figure collection. :D Just to be on theme, I did take a picture of our lil meeces and their shadows; after that, its all figgers, lol. I used my Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Trinity from the Matrix, Yoda from Star Wars, Fathead Han Solo (I'm not being mean, that's what this figure from 1973 is known as) from Star Wars, Lego Rogue of the X-Men, and my Spike Collection plus one Buffy figure. I got down on their level to do this shoot-boy, did my legs cramp up, lol! but it was worth it. Thanks for looking, and comments are always welcome. :D

A Tribute in Bonze . . . .

Seems fitting to post this for the Independence Day holiday.  This memorial park has a wall bearing tiles with the names of all Navy fliers of the EA6B planes who have died in the line of duty.  My favorite part of the park are the life-sized bronze statues, commissioned and paid for by friends and families of the fallen:

the children - a tribute to the families left behind

a flier and his mechanic (plane in the background is the EA6B)

A new addition to the garden for the challenge

Back in high school, while I was in english class one day I was doodling on my paper.  Don't get me wrong, english is actually one of my more favorite subjects, but I think I was waiting for class to start.  I drew a spiral, as I often did.  But it looked perfectly like a snail's shell.  So I set out and made a snail body.  I was so ecstatic with myself.  It was cute and looked like a snail (I can't draw worth a flip).  So it became my signature.  Quite literally.  I put it next to my signature a lot of times, and while at MTSU, I'd often sign the roll for my photography classes with it (mostly just to get a laugh out of my teachers, but I did it all the same).  So since then, I've been obsessed with snails.  My mom knows this, and as she likes to get me trinkets and useless stuff (that I like).  My birthday this year was no different.  She got me a garden snail.  I think he's cute and he fits in perfectly with my flower garden.

Michael saw him and only said "Crap, now there's another snail in my garden."

Thanks for looking, comments of any caliber are appreciated!

Taken with the Canon 5D Mark II.  I took it home with me last night and plan to again this weekend.  Mr.Q, the comparison shots you asked for last week are in the photography discussion.

Where else can one go and find plenty of statue's but a cemetery.  It looked like rain first thing this morning but then the sun came out (for a while) so I ran over to the cemetery here in town.  Lots of glare to deal with but I found plenty.  That's why I'm going to post in Parts.

Monday's have'nt been the best lately. Last Monday I took my Mom to the ER....she ended up having a heart attach. She's doing better and is in recovery. Her history in the last 10 years is not so great. But she's hanging in there.

This Monday (today).....I'm back at the ER, this time it's my daughter. My little model. She fell in to the canyon (where we told her she could go) trying to go swimming. She was suppose to be swimming at a friends house.....who has a pool. The friend lives right next to the Hospital, so when we got a call that she cut her head and was going to the ER we were of course upset but glad that they were so close to the hospital. Little did we know that she and 3 girl friends went down the canyon just behind the hospital and she fell down on shell rock. She also had to be helicoptered out of the canyon.

She's doing good, I'm just glad she's home.

**WARNING**THE SHOTS BELOW ARE OF A BLOODY NATURE

Here are a couple of shots my wife took in the ER..  Makeup please   Had better days

So today is a good day....she's alive.
