Challenge: Loss

Loss (plural losses)

  1. Something that is lost
  2. The condition of having lost something or someone
The idea for this challenge came to me while I was reading "What Have You Lost", a collection of poems edited by Naomi Shihab Nye. It's a subject that's been on my mind a lot, and I thought it might be worth exploring through pictures as well.

Some losses can be life-altering, such as losing your independence, your freedom and loss of your innocence. Others make us appreciate what we have left, losing your home. Some can even be funny, losing your shoe. Sometimes experiencing loss throws us into a deep black hole, losing hope, your faith and your sense of self. And other times we can brush it off and move on, loss of your feathers. Some losses are final, losing the final battle. Others again are sad, losing your purpose. I think we all lose our our way from time to time!

For this challenge I want you to think emotive black-and-white photography. Use the b/w setting on your camera, or if you have the time and energy, use b/w film. Keep it simple, try to avoid heavy PS'ing and effects. What have you lost?

Thanks Penny, for a fantastic learning challenge! Next up is clue ;)

  • I apolegize for the poor quality of my examples. I wanted to do a lot better, but being sick got in the way. Thanks again for a brilliant challenge Penny, I learned so much from it!

First, thanks to Penny for the great challenge. I think it made all of us think photographically as oposed to snapshotigrahpically. (See, I does no big wirds.) Wow, Charlie. This is going to be different and very interesting. Your examples are excellent, wonderful and thoughtful. I'll have to think on that clue.

  • Leave it up to you to challenge our hearts, minds and souls along with our photographic abilities. Your examples are awesome. I'm very excited about this opportunity to rise to the challenge! (Are you sure you aren't reincarnated?) Pyro--hope you figure out that clue before the two weeks is up.

you are amazing! as are these examples for the challange. I've said it before: I think you are really an old man or an old soul; (I like to think "old soul" is correct. This is going to be VERY though provoking, and challenging.

  • Outstanding! This one will make us stretch....I loved your examples in your post. Does anybody else see a face at the vanishing point of the pathway in Our Way? How cool! It looks like a little Buddha face to me... or maybe I need to go put the coffee on!

This can be a very emotional challenge Charlie. I immediately thought of some painful things, but I also remember that you usually find something wonderful once you accept that loss.... over you go

  • It sounds like a great challenge to me too. I also thought of many things I have lost in the past, but with time comes acceptance and wisdom for the most part. What kind of pic would you do for losing your mind though lol =). This one is going to definitely challenge me =). Hugs everyone.
