go wide!

Coney Island Amusement Park has three memorial days each season.  Opening day, The Mermaid Parade and Closing Night.  This year, Closing Night, Astroland may be closing for the last time and there were many photographers there capturing the historical moment in time.

I took a walk on the fishing pier and went wide!

Wide on the Wabash.

Haven't been shooting much the last few days been doing a lot of chores that fell behind while I was down in the back.  Chores that needed to get done before we leave on vacation.  Did manage to stop by the river this morning after I took Barb to work. The river was very calm with a little morning fog beginning to lift.  All alone and, except for a family of ducks, very quiet.  A very sleepy and peaceful morning.  I could have stayed all day but I had chores to do and am thankful for the minutes I did have.

I have returned

By ClassyShots written 9/15/07 6:18 PM, published 9/16/07 7:54 PM

Greetings Earthlings,

Just returned from hiding in the woods for five days. Did you miss me while I was gone? Been looking over the posts for the last week and there are some really nice shots that have been posted.

I've got a bunch of sorting and tossing to do from the week but I'll toss this one of the lake into the "Go Wide" challenge for now. More to come.

Mike (back out of the woods and back to work)

Challenge: Challenge: Go Wide

By wilk from Sep 09, 2007, to Sep 16, 2007

There's been some recent discussion about "appropriate" topics for the next challenge.  I'm thinking "Go Wide" when I read Blizzard's suggestion of Nude Self-Portraits and I'm thinking. . ."could still work."  Then the whole art vs snapshot debate came up and I'm thinking "art" 'nude self-portraits" "wide angle. . ."

Decided to stick with just the wide angle part.  We spend a lot of time zooming in to focus on details.  Now it's time to step back and give the big picture.

Here are some samples, all taken with an infrared filter, in black and white, in the rain.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Candice, thanks for the Simplicity challenge and the opportunity to host.

Salt Marsh: Galveston Island

By wilk written 9/15/07 6:14 AM, published 9/15/07 7:08 PM

Here are a few more photos from the stormy day last week when I visited Galveston.  Part of the island is a wetland preserve.  These were all taken at 28mm, in b/w with an infrared filter.

I'd like to give an interim thanks to the many of you who have already participated in the "Go Wide" challenge; I like what I see and I'm looking forward to what you come up with this week.

SurferGuy Shows you the Water on the Two Ends, Pyro Shows you the Water in the Middle

By Pyro43 written 9/14/07 6:35 PM, published 9/14/07 6:35 PM

Here in Ozaukee County we have a relatively new park called Lion's Den Park that overlooks the shores of Lake Michigan. I drove there and took five pictures at shortly after noon today. The lake was breathtaking with its many shades of blues, greens and azures, and the clouds only added to the beauty.

I present two color shots and three black and white. All were shot using aperture priority with a focal length of 14mm (28mm equivalent) from a tripod. Although I thought the camera was level, I discovered after uploading that they were tipped about 1.5 degrees causing me to have to straighten and crop. (Darn 3 martini lunches.)

Muted Color F8 @ 1/160 second
Vivid Color F8 @ 1/200 second

The Black and Whites were shot with the contrast set at +1.
The internal Red filter provides the darkest sky tones and brightest clouds.
The internal Yellow filter is useful for clear contrast between blue sky with clouds.

B&W with No Filter F8 @ 1/160 second
B&W with Internal Yellow Filter F8 @ 1/160 second
B&W with Internal Red Filter F8 @ 1/160 second

Suggestions, comments and criticisms served with a smile are always welcome.

Going Wide at Pontiac Cove Marina

By bullshoalsview written 9/14/07 4:55 AM, published 9/14/07 4:55 AM

In my post from yesterday, Traderick mentioned the foreground looking a little "chopped off" on my shot of the boats.  I went back through my shots from yesterday morning, and found one that I decided did have a better composition, so I reworked it, and would like to know what you think...
