Challenge: Go Wide!

There's been some recent discussion about "appropriate" topics for the next challenge.  I'm thinking "Go Wide" when I read Blizzard's suggestion of Nude Self-Portraits and I'm thinking. . ."could still work."  Then the whole art vs snapshot debate came up and I'm thinking "art" 'nude self-portraits" "wide angle. . ."

Decided to stick with just the wide angle part.  We spend a lot of time zooming in to focus on details.  Now it's time to step back and give the big picture.

Here are some samples, all taken with an infrared filter, in black and white, in the rain.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Candice, thanks for the Simplicity challenge and the opportunity to host.

Super examples! This challenge gives me a chance to *really* try out the wide angle lenses.........thanks!

    Sounds like a fun challenge!

  • Lidljo
Thanks for the beautiful examples, Bill. I will try, but I am not sure how my little camera will work with this.

  • Blizzard
Wide angle and my large, pure white, blinding ass. This just might work. It might end up looking like a close-up, high key image of the moon, though. :) Good challenge. Since I don't own a wide angle lens, I'll have to improvise.

  • wilk
That's right Kay -- time to break out that 12-24mm lens. Jo, it should work fine; most of the smaller cameras have a 35mm or smaller wide angle (and if not, perhaps you can talk Wim out of his D200 for a couple of weeks!).

Excellant examples! Great Challenge, I've been experimenting with the wide angle shots!

great challenge!!...i might have to dust off the fisheye!!

  • wilk
Where else can you say something like "I might have to dust off the fisheye" and be taken seriously? I can't wait to see Blizzard's entry -- wait that doesn't sound right -- submission? Doesn't work either.

Looking forward to exploring the bigger picture. Sounds like some people (read Blizz) have unique ideas fomenting in their heads already! Should be interesting. Your examples are beautiful. I find "watching" especially intriguing because there is just the suggestion of what is going on beyond the photograph.

    - learning never ends

Thanks, Bill, for not doing the nude self-portrait challenge. I'm going to duct tape the 17-40 on 17 and fire away. Blizz, I will be in So Cal in a couple weeks and I will have my wide angle...

Sounds like fun. This will take me out of my comfort zone for sure. BTW, I love the watching shot. It is such an interesting image. I love the tension of the person partially off the frame holding the binocs.

    - One size does not fit all

  • wilk
Thanks Tom. It's accidental, but I like it too. The camera was on a tripod, on timer, when my wife walked up to look at a shrimp boat out in the rain. She didn't know the camera was about to snap since I was standing back from it.

    -      Oh Shoot

  • Birdie
    sounds good!

  • kitzi
hmm, don't have a wide angle lens so off to the learning board to figure this one out...thanks so much Candice for a great challenge!!

Just a clairification -- when I say Go Wide, I mean to use the wide end of your lens no matter what it is. Almost every camera, whether slr or p/s has a wide angle. The camera I used for my examples are taken at 28mm. If you're not sure, look up your camera and see what it's wide to zoom range is. For example, the Nikon Coolpix P3 camera Lidljo uses has a range from 36mm to 126mm. I'm interested in what she shoots at 36mm.

Thanks for the explanation, I don't own a wide angle lens either, and was thinking to myself there's no way I can make this work :) Beautiful examples. Love the composition in #4 and the stark contrast in #2.

  • Wildman
Terrific shots Bill! Luv the challenge..

  • RobinG
Wow! Awesome examples! Love how the clouds looks so close to the ground. So ominous looking. Great challenge, hope I can get my act together to participate. :o)

  • SaxGuy
Verrrrrrry nice job on this set. You are THE MAN when it comes to B&W, and terrific wide angle shots. (Lovin the driftwood...)

  • colbb
I mentioned a bit of personal history on your other Galveston post, here's another. My Dad was with Austin Bridge Co. and helped build the Galveston Causeway. Great set, as usual.
