I'm In Over My Head

OK...so, I don't know if this is legal or will get me bounced or keelhauled or what, but I am going to submit 2 pics because I can't pick between them. In my humble and lowly opinion, B&W photography is the bomb...and I regrettably rarely work at it, and Ansel is the best because he could make you think we were supposed to see things in B&W. He was that good. That being said, this is a great challenge for all of us.

Future Big Cats

A few more pictures from the Lion Park in Johannesburg. The lion cub shots were taken in the CubWorld section - an area where you can go in and play with the lion cubs. They are pretty active and love a little nibble on your shoes or jeans! You can see they are going to be real big soon - look at the size of their paws!! I was amazed to learn that cubs this size sell to other lion parks / nature reserves for about $600 (AUD).

Before the challenge completely slips away I wanted to submit this...

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES

Fires this past week have been roaring through our State, and I expect one of our Photographica members (DSW) has been fighting one of the bad ones in the Santa Barbara area. Over 100 large homes reported lost there.
Here in Huntington Beach we are fortunate to be some 15 miles or so from the nearest fires, with the only inconvenience smoky skies and ashes blown in by the wind. These shots taken November 15 provide some perspective.
Looking east toward Yorba Linda and Anaheim Hills from roof of parking structure at Beach and Warner - SK1
From same site looking toward ocean, sun filtered by smoke layer - SK2
Looking east from Bolsa Chica wetlands on Pacific Coast Hwy - SK3
On walkway above beach, looking toward Catalina Island - SK4
Closer view from same site, filtered sunlight turns ocean red - SK5
From beach below my shot, beach visitors ignore the strange light of this day - SK6
Wind down today, we can hope the fires will soon be contained.
Challenge: Challenge for November 16th through the 30th - - - BLACK & WHITE

First, a big Thank You to turbo and his silhouette challenge. I think most everyone had fun and enjoyed it.
I know some of you will love the new challenge, and some of you will cringe. Sorry about that. But I must remind you that before there was color, there was black and white. (See The Wizard of Oz for proof certain.)
Okay, the rules are simple. New shots....... not from the archives. After all, the challenge is here to help us to be better photographers, not to see if we can rummage through a box of old prints to find a scanable picture taken twenty years ago at Aunt Matilda's birthday party that seems to fit the current theme. If you have an image taken previously that fits the theme, go out and reshoot it as I did the clump birch shot below. So please be honest and take shots while keeping in mind composition - for example the rule of thirds. Keep in mind contrast - show us some darks and lights in your images. Keep in mind depth of field (DOF) - sometimes long, sometimes short. If your camera has internal filters for B&W, experiment with them to see how a YELLOW filter affects the contrast of a blue sky with clouds. How ORANGE is useful in shooting telephoto shots at distances. How RED can dramatically provide the darkest sky tones and brightest clouds. How GREEN can improve skin tones and bring out facial expressions of portraits. Here are a few examples of B&W.

So now get out, shoot, enjoy and learn. Show us some good new stuff.

Bird Feeder Shots (The first but not the last)
They're Baaack!
My bird feeder is up for the season and I am back to taking photos from my windows.
Hang_on_3_copy (This shot I have to adjust and changed to B&W, it did not come into focus real well but I still liked the wind in the feathers.)
My Hubby is making me a new bird feeder post to but up bigger and more bird feeders.
He Loves Me!! ;)
Enjoy and thank you for any comments you give. ;)
one more for silhouettes!!!!!
I was browsing my shots and came to this one that was perfect let me know what you think
Thanks to all for your ideas. This spider is far from little it was the size of my hand and about seven foot up in a tree. I have another shot of him looking at me and when I took it I had no idea he was showing me his fangs until I got home and was editing and cropping it closer. Almost looks like he was saying "oooo that's what is for supper" It gave me a shiver to think he could have fallen on my head at the time of the shot!!!!!! I want to suck your blood!!!
Hawaii - We Love It

Some more pictures from our big trip. We have visited Hawaii many times over the last 10 years and we love it. Next time we go I am definitely going to have a snorkel at Shark Cove on the north shore.
Silhouettes
For the Heck of it.....
I was going to do laundry at 5:45 Am and I knew it was raining the day before, so I decided to take my camera with me ( I never take my camera with me when I do laundry). After I was done putting my clothes in the machine (6:00am), got in the car and went down to the lake to see what type of Sun I had, if any at all because of the overcast. At 6:15am I was amazed at the results I got. IMG_2471 Clearlake, Ca

More Moon

I took some pictures as well. The moon being so bright keep coming out as blinding headlight. increased shutter speed to about 1/1600 and it was better. Used my 70-300mm lense. will keep working on it.
TURBO'S CHALLENGE - SILHOUETTES
Prison break!
This isn't the greatest quality photo but I thought it was amusing. It looks like they're planning a prison break. I hope it's at least worth a chuckle. Thanks for looking.

The Moon
My attempts to shoot the moon have been feeble, at best resulting in something like this:
So I asked my photo buddy what the heck I was doing wrong - and used her instructions to get this hand-held shot:
Set up my tripod the next night and got my first decent moon shot (then converted it to b/w):
I can hardly wait to get my new lens (70-300mm) and shoot the next full moon!
