A friend dropped over the other night to watch a DVD (The Pursuit of Happiness)

After the Movie, she said, No one can take a Good Photo of me

I replied, I can

You can not, You're a Landscape Shooter, you don't do portraits and no one has ever taken a good photo of me. She shot back.

Yeah, I can

So she went into my bedroom and  grabbed my Canon... Yeah the one with the Big white lens... Tossed it to me and said.
Prove It!

Proof

First Idiot that says it is grainy gets an artistic Boot up the ass, It's supposed to be grainy :^)

I haven’t done one of these in a while and this may be my last one...we’ll see.

We are all told about the “Golden Hours”, that hour after Sunrise and the hour before Sunset. And they are correct, it is a great time to take photos, But I will let you in on a little secret of mine as long as you don’t let this get out on the Internet for everyone to know. I don’t shoot sunsets… I shoot AFTER sunset.

First off, know your subject. I am reminded of my recent shoot out at the Grand Canyon. I was out scouting my locations for shooting later that day when a fellow shows up at the overlook I was at. He had everything right. A Canon 5D, a Gitso Carbon Fiber Tripod, A 16-35 “L” lens and a 18% Grey card for white Balance… oh he had everything he needed… but he didn’t know his subject. It was 1PM on a Crystal Clear Winter day. The Light was there but it was completely flat and Lifeless. No Detail at all to the magnificence of the scene.
Here is an example of what that looked like:Mid-Day Light

Sure it is a great scene but is it an artistic and well crafted shot…not at all

So using conventional wisdom, if this gentleman returned 4 hours later at 5pm, 1 hour before sunset, he would have had a much more dramatic scene. Something likes this:Sunset Light

Surely an acceptable image, much more dramatic with all the shadow play but the problem I have with this image is one of Dynamic range, the range from the Lightest to darkest part. It may exceed some camera's ability to capture it with detail lost in the Dark areas or Blowout in the brightest spots.
And quite frankly it was the image everyone gets. Not the one I wanted. This was confirmed by the 25 or so other shooters at the area I was at.

But as soon as the sunset, they all left. Except for me and a fellow shooting a Nikon D2X…we both looked at each other with a wink and a nod because we knew what was coming.  A few minutes and up to an hour after sunset the sky will begin to glow with the colors of the now dropped sun and if you have the right equipment you can you can take advantage of this wonderful, if dim, available light.

All you need is a good quality Tripod and a way to release the shutter, whether that is a remote control, a shutter release cable or even the camera’s timer function. Just so pressing the shutter button does not move the camera on what may be a long exposure.

I set my Camera on my Manfrotto Tripod and set my ISO at 100, I then use either manual or Aperture Priority (AV) and set my Aperture to F8 to f16 to get the deep Depth of field I would like. I then either manually set the Shutter speed to what ever it will take to get the correct exposure.
Or allow the Camera to automaticly select that in AV Mode.  It maybe as short as 1/30 of a second or it may be 4 seconds or more… whatever it takes.
And these are the results:
After Sunset the Grand Canyon 1
After Sunset the Grand Canyon 2
After Sunset the Grand Canyon 3

The results are; great color, even contrast and wonderful detail

Here is one that I shot the previous year in Death Valley when I first saw the saw the advantage of shooting… After the Sunset.
Death valley after Sundown

Well till next time,
Peace,
Moose
