Coney Island Opens the 2010 Season

Coney Island traditionally opens the season on Palm Sunday.  Yesterday Deno's Wonderwheel Park opened for it's 90th season (1920) and the Cyclone Rollercoaster opened it's 86th season (1924).

In the following photo they are counting down from ten to open Denos Park.  The man in the baseball cap is the grandson of the original builder and owner of the Wonderwheel and Amusement Park.  He is Deno's grandson and he is counting down.  The man with the giant scissor is a local politician and he cut the ribbon accidently at 7, surprissing the little girl right below the scissor.

  Opening Deno's Wonderwheel Park

First day, each year, when the park is open, all children ride for free.  The woman on the left in the baseball cap is a Reverend and 20 years ago she asked Deno to open the park for her children, orphans, who live in Coney Island but never rode the rides, only watched.  Deno's act of kindness has played forward for over 500,000 children.

 Blessing of the Rides

I am blessed to be able to stand on the platform of the Cyclone Roller Coaster and take photos.  They gave me a little badge, says, Pablo Jonsey, Photographer, Coney Island Cyclone Roller Coaster.  The platform only holds about twenty people.  I managed to only bump into two TV cameras and I stepped on Marty's foot(Fishne0).

Lunchtime last week I visited the World Trade Center site.  Walked around, visited my old church, St. Peters, took a few photos that I'd like to share. As some of you know the site is sacred ground to me.  The towers are finally rising from the ashes.  The red tower going up is WTC number 1.

From a few months ago, the sunset after a very windy day, a lot of sand particles were in the air.  And a lot of photographers were there to capture the sunset.  The Steeplechase pier at Coney Island Beach.

 Pier Sunset

This is from two Sundays ago, a flock of Canadian Geese landed on the beach visiting the Coney seagulls.  I waited, watching the geese with this shot in mind.  I waited a good 30 minutes watching the seagulls and geese.  First one seagull took off then about one-third of the geese flock followed.  Then another one-third, then another wave with the remaining geese.

These shots are from a friend's parent's 50th wedding anniversary.  Our friend's parents are also very good friends with us, we see them all the time walking on the boardwalk.

About 15 minutes into this party I realized I was the photographer.

It's always important to get the money shots first.  A high in the sky viewpoint captures the anniversary couple in a circle of relatives and friends.

Challenge: Bi-Weekly Challenge : Creative View Points

from Jan 19, 2010, to Feb 01, 2010

Pre-interlude : Thank you, SG for the Our Book Challenge and, thanks for giving the nod to me, as you say, "your 15 minutes of fame begins now".  I apoligize to Candice for not answering the call a couple of months ago.  Thank you Cory, Leslie, Q, and all the members for keeping the faith.  Thank you Dub for finding inspiration hanging in all different places.

"A photographer shows us a record of what was seen at the time of exposure but the creative photographer reveals to us what could not be seen or understood before. " -Louis Stettner, Wisdom Cries Out in the Streets, 1999

The Challenge is to think creatively by photographing the same object creatively.  Same object, different photos.  Expand your comfort zone, be creative, change your point of view, whirl those dials on top of your camera, where it stops nobody knows, change the light, change the weather, go forth and create your world. Do it in doors, do it in the road, do it in a cross fire hurricane, meditate for several minutes before taking your next best shot.

Not a requirement, but it would be nice to see three photos side by side as story thumbnails. Then again surprise us by using pop-ups. These are new photos of the Cyclone Roller Coaster.

Started snowing and it's been a long time since I posted the view from my window.  Located on 7th Ave between 35th and 36th St.  These are real time photos, just taken seconds ago.

In the first photo there is a new water tower on the left.  In the second photo the big building in the background is the New Yorker Hotel.  In the third photo, looking up 7th Ave, just a few blocks north is Times Square where the ball will be dropping tonight to ring in the new.

When I first joined Photographica I posted mostly city scapes until the biweekly challenge to photograph strangers by Jay. http://www.photographica.org/story/18068/a-stranger-serendipity I found my passion when I started photographing strangers on the streets.  My passion blossomed because members of Photographica suggested famous photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and books like "The Ongoing Moment" by Geoff Dyer.  So you see that's Mr. Wapiti's human interest story.

Here's Mr. Wapiti's human interest photo.

Chester And The Phantom of the Opera

Yes, we took Chester to see the Phantom of the Opera.

It's been a very bad end of 2008 and a worse beginning to 2009.  And I don't mean the destruction of Astroland. Anyway, we carry on.  Through the month of December I was lucky to have Chester as my companion.  Chester is a doll, a Green Bay Packer stuffed animal who travels around the world.  We take photos of him in his travels.

Due to all the things happening to me, I was not able to finish my Chester photo set to the best of my abilities.  So I up loaded all the photos into another account and created a slide show for your viewing pleasure.  Enjoy.  The beginning photos in the slide show have already been presented here.  The photos at the end are new and have not been edited.

So here's Chester.

Astroland Icon (The Rocket) Highlights & Shadows Challenge

Pablo57

published 1/7/09 4:32 AM

Yesterday they took the Astroland Icon, the rocket, down from it's perch on the Coney Island Boardwalk, throwing the town into shadows. The whole thing has me walking in shadowland. I apoligize.

Highlights 8/1/8

 Shadows 1/6/9

Charles Denson, director of the Coney Island History Project says his group is currently in "serious negotiations" with a group that will move the rocket to a new Coney location. "It looks like it [might] be staying. It's a survivor, and it'll keep the Astroland name alive. It's a time capsule; everything inside is absolutely preserved." Charles Denson author of Coney Island Lost and Found the definitive reference book of Coney Island.

The Rocket is 46 years old and Astroland is the only home it's ever known! Looks like the Rocket's poised for a journey. I hope there's a place for it in the "new" Coney Island. - Tricia - Save Coney Island Coalition

Neptune City - Nicole Atkins
You can't see me from this view
All the way down
Trailing the procession
I'll hide out a few more days
Then I'll be leaving this place soon

Our hearts are singing out just for you
A cemetery song for summer
And if we knew just what we could do
A cemetery song we'd not sing

I'm sitting over Neptune City
I used to love it
It used to be pretty
I'll come down, walk around a while
Until I'm sure I can never go home again

Maybe if I paid attention
I could learn to love the landscape I was born to
By the river in the rain
Let it make me new again

Our hearts are singing out just for you
A cemetery song for summer
And if we knew just what we could do
A cemetery song we'd not sing

I'm sitting over Neptune City
I used to love it
It used to be pretty
I'll come down, walk around a while
Until I'm sure I can never go home again

Challenge: Bi-Weekly Challenge : Highlights and Shadows

Pablo57
2116
from Dec 28, 2008, to Jan 10, 2009

Thank you RobinG for the Christmas Meaning Challenge and thank you for giving me the opportunity to present the next challenge.
Highlights and Shadows.

When creating a photograph we are capturing the light reflected off objects.  An object cannot be photographed twice exactly the same way because of the changing light.  This is particularly true outdoors where the sun or moon moves across the sky casting different highlights and shadows every second. Light is the most important effect on photography.  Light usually distinguishes a  good photo from an exceptional photo.

For this week’s challenge please present photos that show the effects of light on a subject.

 effects of light

For those of you presented with an un-naturally cold outdoors, as an indoor experiment with stationary light, move an object to all sides and distances from a lamp and photograph the effect of the highlights on the subject and the shadows caused by the stationary light source.

Or leave the object stationary and move the light (a flashlight will do).

For outdoor photos the sun at dusk or dawn creates many variations of highlights and  shadows on an object.

Chester showing the effects of light

Red Sunrise which shows the lelft side of Elmo's face highlighted.  Also shows the lights of 6th Ave.

Memories shows the highlight on my friend holding Chester which is a spotlight on him.

To make a long story short, please present photos of objects which show the highlights and shadows on those objects. May the light be with you.

Mr. Quakers will be the next challenger starting on January 12, 2009.
