Days Gone By

I have been working in my darkroom going thru my father and grandfathers old negatives picking ones that I think are of interest. This one of Kerns old store which was torn down years ago, I thought was pretty interesting. This was taken on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit in 1938 by my grandfather. I made an 8x10 print and scanned the image and spent quite a bit of time getting rid of dust and scratches. I still have grandpa's old camera and it is in good working order. we're lucky today that making a photograph has gotten simpler. This one took several hours to make.
Always Have My Camera
Just Us Chickens Monarch Junco Sleeping Duck
We had a Labor Day party last Saturday down at the hunting camp and my buddy brought his grill over for cooking chicken ... They were delicious. Yup, they were beer can cooked.
The Monarch was taken yesterday from our front porch. The Sleeping duck and Junco were from my files.
No Parking
No Parking Winter up here is not always bad. We had a storm the night before and the wife and I went into town for a beer and a drink the next day and since we had our cameras with us we took a few pictures of the snowdrifts. I get a chuckle out of this one.
The Beginnings
Old Homestead Old Homestead Drybrushed
In 1981 my Aunt Laila sent me a letter and some photos she took of the old homested we lived in back in the late 30's. I was only four years old then and did'nt remember much about the place. These photos were taken with an old baby brownie and I scanned them and did the best I could with them. So it does pay to have a camera with you all the time. This old place is a short drive South of the Porcupine Mountains of Michigans Upper Penninsula. The little log barn is where we kept our cow, the middle bldg you know what thats for and the old sauna on the right has collapsed. I do remember bathing there. Note the front door with no porch. Thats for winter time so we could get out after a storm. Also very few windows so the house stayed warmer. Water was from a spring and we had a wood stove. Pretty humble beginnings but we were a happy bunch.

The Canadian Freighter Mississagi
We get quite a few freighters here in Ludington, this one is from Canada probably delivering some traprock which is used as a base for asphalt in driveways and parking lots. Sometimes it's used, as is, for the same.
We were eating breakfast and I saw this bird so I set up the tripod and took a few photos. It was fun to watch it eating.
Morning Fog is along the beach of Lake Michigan. I like foggy pictures, there is always something mysterious about them.
Clouds
Foxgloves are a beautiful plant and the colors are exceptional.
I had been waiting for a couple of years to get this shot of Lincoln Lake about a mile south of our house and yesterday was the day. I tuck scenes of special places into the back of my mind and wait for the weather and lighting to be right. Without these clouds I feel this shot would not be much to look at. Clouds are our friends.

The Presque Isle River is a scanned photo as is Cranberry Lake. End of a beautiful Day is one of Lake Michigans calmer moments and we had many people out photographing that evening. I'm not sure what the yellow flower is but I thought it was pretty.

St. Annes Catholic Church Mackinac Island, MI
Daisy's was taken last Friday evening around 7:30 using my old Sony in nightshot mode (infrared) with a number 72 filter. The original photo is a puky looking green so I desaturated it and using various P.S. tools came up with this.
St Annes is scanned from a photo I took several years ago, a rainy day shot.
Our granddaughter got married about three weeks ago and I caught them out of the corner of my eye and grabbed this shot.
We get some spetacular sunsets here off Lake Michigan and I am always on the lookout.
Flowers Up Close

Garlic Mustard is an invasive plant that came from Europe. I found a large patch out in the back of our yard and did'nt know what it was so I googled garlic smelling plant and got the story about it. The leave smell like garlic, the root tastes like mild horseradish and the tiny seeds taste somewhat like mustard. None of it very good but I thought the flowers and leaves looked nice. The mushrooms were plentiful this year and I enjoy photographing them. This capture I used my new remote and came up with this. Coneflower I did a closeup and cropped in PS then desaturated it and used image>adjustments>curves to get the toneality I liked.

Flowers Up Close

Milkweed in bloom I took yesterday along the shoreline of Lake Michigan just north of our home. It's not a very pretty plant but still interesting. I waited around for a Momarch but maybe not the right time for them.

Morning Fog Storm Ludington Light House
My wife went to town to get some groceries and when she got home she told me the fog on the lake was beautiful so I took this shot of Morning Fog. Storm and Natures Power were on a cold and stormy day last Nov. It was uncomfortable but the photos were worth it to me. I'm not new to Photographica but new to uploading photos and so if I look a little confused ... I am.
Dune
Storm
I took this shot, last November, of the Ludington Lighthouse on a pretty windy day. actually I took many shots of these waves. I particulary liked this one because the wave seems to be hugging the lighthouse and the bird acts as a counterpoint. Many times we'll see eagles here during storms but I believe this is a seagull. I did some cropping in ps along with making it a B & W image, also some tonal changes.
Snowy Morning

I had taken our grand daughter out early to help her with her photography which she was interested in. We planned the shoot the night before and got up fairly early, had breakfast, and left for a drive around the area near her home. It was two degrees below zero outside and we were dressed for the weather, also had the car heater for warmth. I took this shot of this farm road and trees using a Canon A2 mounted on a tripod. The immage is scanned from the print.
