Attempt at DOF

Many, many blooms are bursting in my garden.  I thought I'd play around and try to do some DOF.  All I did is frame this shot in editing and a little bit of contrast.  I'm trying to catch the bees buzzing all around my lavender shrub but all I get is a yellow and black blur!

THE FALLEN SOLDIER

Don't weep for meflag3

O' Land of the free
When it was my time to fall flag2
'Twas for my country's call
'Twas for the land that I loved,flag1

That I gave my all
And for the land that I loved,
I did freely give flag4
And in her freedom
And her courage
I'll continue to live

Just thought this was fitting for the weekend.

This was an experiment.  I tend to be VERY unhappy with how I stage macros but like this one.  What do you think?

abandoned spaces

I drove around today and noticed the encroachment of the city on the farmland.  Many of the barns and farm areas are becoming abandoned and "progress" is stamping it's footprint on the land.  Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it isn't.  Tell me what you think.

With the dusting of snow and freezing wind, it warmed me up to run across this summer photo.  Enjoy!

My focus and composition

Those who know me are aware that I love going to historical areas and photographing them.  Every Christmas there is a reenactment of the Stones River Battle, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.  The people who come out are very nice and are great at ignoring the camera!  I shot in color but processed in either B&W or sepia for an aged effect.  If I can figure out the noise setting on my Photoshop someday, I might try adding that.  But take a look and give some advice please.
Soldier 1   This is a photo of the Rebel soldiers after they had drilled for the crowd.

soldier 2   I just loved this guy's hat and the panache is wore it with!

soldier 3  This soldier was getting his gear together on the battlefield.

soldier 4 This is one of my favorite because it came out so sharp.  He was just taking in everything going on around him.

soldier 5 Cannon fire!  That was loud!!

I did work some with these photos in framing them.  To me they look better.  But I'm not sure how everyone else views them.  You can see the framed photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jellybeansview.  Please take a look and let me know what you like better.

Happy New Year!

I am trying to play a little with the editing process.  Today I went out on the greenspace trail because I needed some quiet time.  I love the sound  of water falling, so I headed for the river.  Take a peek and let me know what you think.

Today our Australian Shepherd, Brodey, passed away due to illness.  It has been very hard for my kids to deal with the circle of life and saying goodbye.  We love you Brodey.

I decided to try some more black and whites at the battlefield since I have a new camera.  It is so lonely-feeling out there in the winter.  These are the four I like the best from today.  What do you think?  Ideas?

Chicago in November

So, I had to visit Chicago recently for a conference for work.  Of course I had to bring my camera along!  I had only been to Chicago once before, but I remember enjoying walking around the city just taking in the skyline.  So enjoy the shots :)

This is a view of one of the lake from McCormrick Place, the largest convention center in the world.

As I walked downtown, I came across some cranberry farmers whom had taken over a fountain in front of the Chicago Tribune.  They had made a cranberry bog!

One of the parks featured several sculptures.  This one reminded me of a giant silver kidney bean.  But the cool thing was I could see the skyline reflected in the sculpture.

One of my sidetrips was to The Field Museum.  They had a wonderful gem stone display.  I loved the shadows in this shot and how the stone just pops out at you.

We drove up to Pigeon Forge for the long weekend.  The boys love the aquarium so of course we had to visit!  I have new camera so I wasn't sure how things would turn out.  These were two of my favorites.  What  do you think?  It was harder than I thought to shoot through the aquarium glass.  Any suggestions?

Playing around......

So, I know I've disappeared for awhile.  Life has a way of sucking all your attention sometimes!  (and kicking you in the shins...)  I finally had a chance today to pick up my camera.  It was one of those days where I just didn't like much of what I came home with.  Out of 60+ photos, I only liked 12.  Of the 12, I'd only post these 4 to be commented/voted on.  I'm trying some different stuff (for me) and trying to stretch a little.  These are all taken at Cannonsburgh, a restored village with historical buildings from when Middle Tennessee was settled.  So take a look and let me know.......

cannonsburgh1 (from the bridge you have to cross over the Stones River to reach the village.)

cannonsburgh2 (This happens to also be the chapel I was married in)

cannonsburgh3 (restored gargage/gas station on the edge of the village.  How it fits??  I don't know either)

cannonsburgh4 (also on the property)

I was out at a cemetery leaving some flowers and came across a spring house.  It had a sign that it was used as a field hospital during the Civil War due to the water location.  Here's one of my shots. Don't know that I'd drink out of this!
