Tagging is a system lets you, the reader and participant of this website, decide how to catagorize the vast amount of information at this website.

For example, using tags - Here is a map of all the tags so far.  The larger the tag is, the more popular it is.

The Goal
The goal of tagging is to look at a story and say "wow, I want to see more posts like this one!".  So you view its tags and find a characteristic you would like to see more of.

The Catch
See, the idea behind tagging is that you get to decide what uniquely describes a post.  So the catch is it is up to you to make it work!

The Process
The process of tagging is pretty simple.  You take a post (like this one) and ask yourself "what words describe this story and its images".  You then click Show Tags or Add Tags and click Change, which will let you add and remove tags associated with a story.  If you feel an existing tag doesn't accuratly describe the post, you can remove it.  If you feel there is a phrase that also could describe the post, you can add it.  Sometimes the system will suggest phrases already in the system.  You can accept one of those, or use your own.

Now what?
We need to get started.  I encourage every one of you to go back and tag your old posts.  The more posts on this website that get tagged, the better.

Remember, you can do this to anybodies story, not just your own!

So.... Go fourth and tag!

Now that you've given us the key to its use, I like it a lot.

Guess this is a feature I won't be using. Doesn't seem to be Firefox compatable. If you are interested this is the error from the Java Script Console in Firefox... Error: toggle_tags is not defined Source File: javascript:void(toggle_tags('2005/10/28/123547/84')) Line: 1

    - Oh Bull!

You probably have to do a complete refresh. It works on firefox, thats the only browser worth using anymore and all I really test on. If it still doesn't work, let me know via PM and I'll see what is up.

It was a refresh or cached page thing. Dumped the cache and they are working fine. Glad to see you are a Firefox person! Thanks

Just my opinion, but the bottom of the post is now looking pretty croweded with all the options. Perhaps some icons (instead of text) would make it look a bit cleaner. OR, at least put the "read comments" link first in line, bigger, etc. so it's easier to hit. thanks,

If you guys are bored, you can start visiting older posts and tag them. You just make your URL look like this: http://www.photographica.org/main/

    for example: http://www.photographica.org/main/10 http://www.photographica.org/main/240 http://www.photographica.org/main/430

Nice job, Cory--it's a feature on Flickr that I love to use to explore, and I bet it will become a huge thing to use here, too, as we have a wealth of great photos that would require a lot of digging to find.

I really like this!! It really encourages me to go back a few hundred or more pages to see what I have forgotten. (old timers disease)

Having been on vacation for a week, I am quite lost....I'm sure I'll catch up eventually! Looks like you've been extremely busy, Cory! Thanks!

So, how many pages of stories are there? hmmm?

  • StevenWolf
Great idea, cory. BTW, your "new site news" link at the top of the main page doesn't work. It just takes me to a blank-ish page with the words "Post Your Entry". :]

    - right brained...

Uuuh, is it just me? I don't see any links at all for tags. How do you add a tag, or change a tag? I just tried to do this with my own story, and did not see any way to do this.
