So, after someone recently posted a how-to on making a real photographers backdrop, I decided to play with making them digitally.

One of them was made with a scanner, one with my camera, both were then heavily modified to get that backdrop look:

 Blue background
Brown background

Here's a picture I used working with a modified version of the blue background: Mary in Uniform

Oh - if you really want to know, the background in the portrait is the blue background - which was originally a scan of a crumpled up t-shirt. Brown background started out as a macro-focused picture of some mulch.

Do you think this is a useful techinique?

  • This is very nice.......howdid you get her inFRONT of the backround? Did you have to cut her out of the original picture? She is soooo very pretty. (can you tell I am "new" at this)

babes, You've got the idea - basically I used PS Elements to extract her from the background, then layered her in front of the "backdrop". Next I played with the color of the back drop till it worked with the colors in her uniform, and I was done!

For best results, whenever possible, take a picture of your subject in front of a lime green backdrop...then just select the green color...after all the green is selected, right click on your mouse and chose to "Select Inverse". You can then drag your subject over to the new backdrop. Of course, that would mean buying a lime green sheet or professional backdrop....(or maybe dying a white sheet green)
