A different way of photography

Things get different when you plan to use your work for a website. For the website I've been working on, I needed pictures that could be cropped down to 800x75, needed to be blurry (so as to not draw the eye from the content), and needed to look good in a sepia tone.

All of these, I think, did a good job.

PS: if your window pops up weird, i dont know why - there are no black bars on the bottom of these pictures...

Interesting series of photographs.  Some work better then others three, seven and eight especially so.

  • What about those that make them better?

Three is my favorite, however the actual photograph it was cropped from leaves something to be desired...

The last two i just took today with the express purpose of cropping them into their present form.

  • I like three and one... they seem less.... specific.  they could be any people, anywhere.

  • might sound really odd... but is there a min height set for popup windows?  If you view the image by itself, it's got no black line.  That seems to be the bg of the window behind the image!

In my opinion Cory three, seven and eight are more interesting then the rest because they offer something interesting to look at.  There is something else in the photographs which stands out to me.  In the third photograph the group of children standing around the smiling boy is appealing because it conveys a sense of emotion, a feeling of happiness or enjoyment.  You may imagine children playing after school, enjoying the warmer weather.  In the seventh photograph the branches of the flowering tree hold together the composition.  Stretching across most of the frame the branches provide a sense of unity to the image and sort of unite the people just walking by. On a similar note the line of windows in the eight photograph provide a compositional element which bring unity to the image.  The repeating image of the window provides a structure for the rest of the image and the people in the frame are given a sense of place.  Looking at the image you might have some sense of where it was taken or be able to think of a similar place you've seen.  Furthermore I like this image the best because of how the faces have been blurred.  The blurs have eliminated most of the facial features and the people are basically indistinguishable.  Because of this these people could represent anyone, your brother or mine, it doesn't matter.  The people are human beings but not any particular human beings.  I think that is why I like those three photographs the very best.

  • translucent: It does this in both IE & Mozilla (safari users?).  Maybe there is a min-height in browsers...

conrad: I'll make sure to use 3,7,8 on the more prominent pages.   The faces on all have been blured (either by the camera, or by photoshop) deliberatly.  I dont want peoples eyes always going to these images - they should be looking at the text, not pretty pictures :-)

I expected that it was your intention to blur the faces of the people.  The focus of the images isn't the people in the photographs so what you've done works well.

  • I like to know these things, so I did a test.  I think you're right that it's the browser limit.
    See?

  • Cory, it's the same for Safari--black band across the bottom.
