Since the Milwaukee River runs through the heart of our village, we have to be prepared for the unforeseen problems that can occur. Whether a boat or canoe capsizing, a snowmobile going through the ice or simply someone falling into the river, our firefighters and rescue personnel have to be ready at all times.

With this in mind, our fire department practices several times a year at the river. Here is one of our practices that turned into a rescue (of a sort).

A person just doesn't realize the extent of your (firefighters) experiences; there's more involved than I ever dreamed of, anyway. These are great pics; I commend you for your work....do y'all ever get frostbite? How insulated are those suits?

Kay, they are drysuits. Unlike wetsuits which absorb water and allow one to get wet, these do in fact keep one dry. Although they are designed for cold water, they don't have a great deal of insulation. Jellybean...these pics were taken during the winter. They are not recent shots. Even here in Wisconsin, we don't get snow this early....LOL

Nice shots Pyro. Hey, next time you are going to have a practice, could you give a fellow Wisconsinite a call so I can take some shots? I am not that far away and would love the oppotunity to do a few. I would appreciate it.

  • Gosh, thought if you had that much snow by now, what will it be like in a few months. Thanks to you and all involved this type of work. You may at times think the job you perform is not appreciated, but believe me--it is.

Great gallery Pyro! Now I will have to go and take pics of our guys when they do their ice water rescue. My husband has done it for a while now. They go to a local river and actually go out on thin ice and rescue each other. Those suits are amazing. Our Firefighters get a lot of calls for people going in because of thin ice or by dams and such. Even calls about dogs too.
