Popup LinkA or Popup LinkB? I was playing with focal point and DOF. Isn't that an eye doctor thing?
Went up the river and the color wasn't there and as low as the water level was, there weren't much in the way of rapids either. I packed it up and went up on top of the pass to shoot a few.

Not fair, not fair at all! Both of these shots are killer.....can I vote for the thumbnail?

I think A has a more natural look to it.

  • I struggled with exactly the same thing at Crater, Mike and I was able to solve it with a Lens that kept both planes of view in Focus (10mm) well at least I think it did. I am still transfering images from laptop to PC and I haven't looked at them up close. That said, I think I like B

  • Dirk.... the tree was only about 15 or 20 feet from me. I was stopped down to F16 and hand holding at 1/30th. Didn't really want to crank the ISO up. I guess I could have tried manual foucus, split the difference, and seen what happened.

Splitting hairs...A..just because the focus is on the grander of the two. And it's what my natural eye would of focused on..and did.

  • B gets my vote. I like the texture and color of the wood against the soft bule/grey of the mountain. The peak in the background gives the tree and the whole image a sense of place. What I am curious about is how you got the soft look in the water on the thumbnail. I have tried this and failed. Any advice?

I like A best. In B I felt like I couldn't focus. I wanted to look past the branch to see what was behind it.

  • I like B better. A feels like the branch is in my way...

  • I like them both, but I lean to B just a bit. It feels like a portrait with a beautiful backdgrop, but the focus seems to be the subject (branch) in front. I can tell you're getting a split vote. ;-)

  • I like B. Blurred deadwood on A became a distraction for me. Perhaps if it was more blurred and softer. On B all felt right. Beautiful.

I see them printed and mounted side-by-side - they both offer a great perspective - the kind of thing where you can't take your eye of either piece of eye-candy.
