Through the Looking Glass

While in Ann Arbor this past weekend we stopped by this used and classics bookstore in the old town district.  In the back room they have some beautiful black and whites of American Indians from the turn of the 20th century.  I caught these pictures from the alley looking through the antique glass windows (notice the ripples).  I especially like the image with the Indian appearing almost as a ghost in the lower left-hand corner.  There are so many reflections working in that picture that it can be disorienting.  I tried to improve it in PS but wound up liking the original better so that's the one I posted.  I hope you enjoy my experiment.

  • I love real glass! I saw your "ghost"! Cool! We live in an older home in Ferndale and had real glass, but then due to damaged frames, broken glass, and high gas prices, we got new vinyl ones! Yuck!

All glass shots are fine, but I love the stack of books. I feel that in Glass 3 and Glass 2 that the focus is too much on the window frame and not enough on the things inside. Is that what you were trying to do?

  • do like that first one--so many things to look at and speculate about. The yearbooks are cool, too!

  • Nice shots! I used to have an american history text from the 1890's. It just kinda got displaced amongst the years growing up.

  • Pyro: Initially I tried focusing on what was inside rather than the frame but when I reviewed the shots later I wasn't happy with the result. Here is an example. I went back on a later day to take the shots I eventually posted.

  • It is hard for me to take a picture through glass, always have too much of a glare--Of the ones you have shown, like the books and #2 the best.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Did you try your smallest aperture for greater DOF?

  • Pyro: Yes I did, but I was working with ambient light only and was close to the window, so without a tripod there was little I could do.
