I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with New York Institute of Photography. I thought about signing up for this just to brush up on my skills I have lost! I want to learn more. I have done some looking into this correspondence school and it seems pretty legit. Anyone have any comments??

Umm... First of all, they DO have a digital class. The Complete Course in Digital Photography covers all aspects of digital photography including post-processing software (photoshop), how to use a digital camera and get the best reults, how to use a scanner with great results, etc. Their Complete Course in Professional Photography covers everything about being a great photographer, including 35mm AND digital SLRs. This is more than likely the course anyone here would be interested in... Secondly, once you are a registered student, you DO have email access to the professors and other staff. True, the classes aren't actually web-based; it's more of a go-at-your-own-pace type thing and you send your assigment to the prof when you have completed it...or something like that. I've never taken any classes at NYIP, but harriet (<- that's her photographica username...you can PM her...) has and I'm pretty sure she got a lot out of it... Maybe I misunderstood dennis' comment about "not digital"? ...

I looked into it once upon a time. It looked like a good program to take as a refresher of sorts, or for the intermediate skill level. They had a few things that I was not interested in (They had a "nude" course - I don't think that was required though), and the timing just wasn't right. My biggest issue was the cost ($900 if memory serves). If you just want a couple of classes, check your local community college.

Re: still sending info Well, that's a private school for ya! Heh. I still get things in the mail from Gibbs, even after moving out of the state! And that's from over 10 years ago!

Chris is right I am enrolled in nyip. I'm on the last unit now which consists of 6 units. It's $1000.00 but you can take up to 3 years to pay for it at about $35 a month. I've really learned alot from it. I also have emailed my advisor many times and she always got back to me with in a day. In my opinion it's well worth it. PM me if you wanna know more. I also checked the BBB online and there were no complaints at all.

As a new member...I noticed your ? about NYIP. I first took an interest in photography in '79. I looked into the course in '87 and signed up. I have had some great jobs after finishing the course. I currently do weddings, little league sports, and portraits. The course got me my start and the advisor was promt in giving comments to help me improve in my work. Good luck with the course...You will enjoy it.

Hi Everyone, In case you haven't already seen them, the online photography courses offered at BetterPhoto.com are also fantastic. These classes are 4- or 8-weeks long, and you interact directly with published, professional photographers. They are so much fun, and you learn a lot in a very short time. Happy holidays! New York Institute of Photography vs. BetterPhoto.com. Anyone had an experience with both and can offer feedback. Primary interest right now is in digital. Thanks!!

I am currently enrolled in NYIP. I was SO excited about the course. I have found that they have competely crushed my spirit. I have totally completed Units one and two. They have not given me any positive feed backs at all. The best I get from them is 'Stay with it'. My first red flag was when I called to see how I was to proceed on to unit 2. I was referred to about 3 people before anyone would help me. I got the impression that I was interrupting their busy work schedule. It seems to take them FOREVER to send the next unit and the tape with your review on it. I put a sticky note on my test for unit 3 asking why it took so long for them to review my picutes and send the tape. I got a very nasty and curt letter from Jerry Rice. He is such a rude person. I am at the point where I really do not care if I finish the class or not. Since it is costing me $1000.00 I guess I will send in the test. I do not plan to send anymore pictures for them to review. They continue to tell me to 'Stay with it'. A lot of their material refers to FILM. I do digital. That was one of my questions before signing up. I was told that this class did not deal with FILM a lot - that is another lie!
