Avatars!

By coryking written 4/26/05 5:51 AM, published 4/26/05 5:51 AM

I've added in the ability to give yourself an avatar! Why did I do this? Cause I thought it was a bit cool!

To change your avatar:

  1. Upload a file under 150 pixels tall and 126 wide.
  2. Go into your prefs and select the image you just uploaded as your "picture" (I am going to change the labling on that soon...).
  3. Enjoy!

Update [2005-4-26 5:50:44 by codepoit]: Bumped to the top for the new people. Also wanted to say that if you are having trouble getting your uploaded avatar image to show up in the drop-down list in your preferences page, check the comments to this entry for help tips...

things keep getting better and better... i like how it now shows "who" your posting as to cut down on forgetting to log in. cheers cory!

  • doug
*you're. i hope a spell check is the next thing on the cutting block ;-)

  • Peteyboy
    Look away. I'm Hideous!

  • ishrath
Cool! Absolute Freeze! Also helps you know if you are signed in to post. Great Job Cory!!

  • ishrath
I tried uploading mine but its the same message as dirk's. Could not proceed further. will attempt again later.

  • Marksda1
Cool - although it didn't take the first time.  Not sure why.  I uploaded only a display file - figuring the other two were moot.  It said it uploaded, but didn't appear under my photos or as an option.  I tried a second time, and I uploaded the same picture as display, thumbnail, AND high res (probably overkill).  That time when I went into my preferences, it was available in the drop-down!  Not that I think anyone wants to see my mug that bad!

  • Marksda1
First off - very cool update - I didn't really offer my appreciation in the last post.  However, one nit to pick, I miss being able to click on the handle of the person who comments so that I can see their pictures, etc.

    - Just a Wannabee

  • coryking
The list will only show pictures that are under 150 tall x 126 wide.  I'll probably make it 150 x 125 instead.

And yea, I'll put that click-on-person feature back in.

    - Spike Lee

  • Jenssis
Ok, I am trying this, I don't think the file shrunk down so good, anyone got any suggestions?  I did a black and white and even though it told me it uploaded, it wasn't in my gallery... God only knows where on the web it is.

  • codepoit
I'm pretty sure you have to upload these images both as a regular display file and the same exact image as the thumbnail. That's what made it work for me, anyway. Nice feature, Cory! Any chance you could add a "Preview" feature for comments?

    - I'm Special!

  • DHuckle
When I went into my prefs the picture pull down said none :o(... I think I will try again in a bit. i am blonde, so I could be doing something wrong, lol!

  • austinspace
Thanks to the advice above, I was able to do it quickly by uploading both regular and thumbnail, just choosing the same image for both. This is a cool feature--and ruins the future Self Portrait contest!

    - here and there

  • Marksda1
Cory, glad the "click on person" feature will be back!

And it's really neat to put some pictures (be they actual images of the person or not) with names!

    My Avatar! Like it?

    great idea.

took a while, I had to load low, high and thumbs, so lets see if it works

  • CHcreations
HI CORY - IS THERE A REASON YOU ARE NOT PAYING ME THE MONEY YOU OWE ME OR RESPONDING TO ME E-MAILS????

EVERYONE ON HERE BE VERY AWARE THAT CORY IS NOT TOO TRUSTWORTHY WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING FOR PRINTS SOLD ON HIS SITE. ALSO, THERE IS NO WAY TO REMOVE IMAGES AND REPEATED REQUETS TO REMOVE MY ACCOUNT AND ALL IMAGES (AFTER MONTHS OF NOT BEING PAID FOR A PRINT SALE) HAVE GONE UNANSWERED.

    NOT TOO COOL,

    CHRIS

  • coryking
Check your email man.  I need your address to mail a check!

FYI - I really slack on the checks and manage to get them out like once every other month.  This site doesn't get enough in sales to justify mailing $5 checks every month.  I do pay people though.

    - Spike Lee

  • austinspace
Chris, I was wondering not long ago why we hadn't seen new entries from you in some time. Your work was uniformly excellent and elevated the level of the site.

It's easy to forget--since the conversation was so long ago--that this site is notdesigned to be a venue for photography sales. I'm sure Cory would be delighted if we did generate more sales--then he could upgrade that 386 that all our images are stored on (joking).

This site isn't Cory's job, either, and he doesn't get nearly enough time to devote to it. Rightfully, you're entitled to your payment--that's great that you sold a print!--and I hope the situation will now be taken care of and we all can move on.

But pleasereconsider having your account shut down and the images removed--we need more, not less of the level of work you posted here. The site has grown in recent months into a great community of great photography and great comraderie, and your presence would be missed. As you said when you first posted, "I welcome the opportunity to share some of my images and to see the photos from fellow photographers from around the world." That's what the site is about!

If you still would like your account closed, Cory must do that--but I can delete your images: just email me with the request, and I'll do it. Not happily, but I will.

    Regards, John

  • Marksda1
Okay, Johnny come lately here, and I haven't been so lucky as to have sold anything.  If I do, I'll be tickled pink, but at this point, it's recreational anyway.  At any rate, could the payment be done via paypal?  That might make it less painless unless you're in the camp that paypal is one of the four horsemen of the apocolypse.  :-)

    - Just a Wannabee

  • codepoit
I'm in the camp of which Mark speaks...Paypal is the devil, Bobby Boucher!

    - I'm Special!

  • guillermo60639
this is a great idea thanks cory

  • Marksda1
hhmmm... "less painless"  typing faster than I think or a slip?

So far I've nothing against paypal, but give me time...

    - Just a Wannabee

  • Photo Yaloo
I guess I'm an idiot too.  I've tried everything I can think of and can't seem to make this work.  What I'm I doing wrong?

    - In tune with the camera.

  • tbell
Cool idea, indeed, but I'm another one who found "none" under "picture" in my preferences, though I uploaded display and thumbnail size photos successfully.

  • dennisjb
art for art's sake, the money aspect drags down the overall feeling of accomplishment and peer respect from what you produce...does everything have to be measured in $$??

  • ishrath
Chris! John is right. This place is great for photography and we dont aim for sales in here. Give us the opportunity to keep viewing your great work from time to time. Cory, John and all other people involved in this website do a great job of keeping this site alive for all of us to learn more. Earning is secondary. Cory respects every photographers work and is does his best to help them come up.

This site is great as far as exposure goes. I have my pix being used on gap.com because of photographica. No I did not sell it but gave them permission to use it coz I did not feel like selling it. It was close to my heart.

You never know who is watching your work out there. Dont be upset Chris! Just mail him whenever you have anything on mind. I know he is prompt in replying too.

  • Peteyboy
Does anybody really think they are going to make money on their prints here anyway? Pro's have a hard enough time making money selling stock pix. This is for fun. Forget about it. It's all just Gravy.

  • CHcreations
I agree that it will take time to get out a print check, and I do know that this site is not about money....however...the one print sale I am referring to was back in December of 2004..FOUR MONTHS ago!!!!! That seems a little excessive. It's not the money I am worried about...it's the fact that someone else besides me has my original hi-res image files, and has sold at least one print of them and then never paid me for it. And could be doing the same over again. Or responded but to one e-mail.

The idea to sell images on this site was not mine, and I assumed that the sales would be handled in a professional manner. I do have respect for everyone involved on this site, but to a semi-pro who is trying to maintain control over the distribution of his images, having someone out there with my high-res original images is making me feel very nervous, esp. when they haven't followed through on their end of the aggrement yet as far as sales go.

I really do like the design of the website and wish everyone involved the best. I have no problem with contining to post here, I was just getting nervous that me e-mails were going unanswered and there was no responce from Cory. I would be glad to keep my photos and presence her,

    Chris

Re: Avatars not working after upload:

The only further suggestion I have is to make sure the photo is smaller than, if not equal to the maximum dimensions of 150 high by 126 wide. As for what you may be doing wrong...it's hard to say, since I don't know what you are doing. :)

    - I'm Special!

  • ahf
Took a while for me too - I changed from 126 px wide to 120 and uploaded thumb, image and hi-res.

  • kwsNI
Chris, glad to see you're staying.  Cory isn't always the most responsive person but I know he won't abuse or exploit any images you've uploaded.

    - Contumelious

  • coryking
Man, these avatars kind of slow down the loading of comments!  I might have to do some more code tweaks to speed things up.

I'll probably also add some way for your avatar image to size properly so it shows up in the list.

I am still having problems getting my avitar to appear. I go to pref. and drop box says None. I have downloaded many small pixs and tried downloading all three with my small pix 145 X 109 and 150 x 112. Does anyone have any suggestions for me, or do I need to just keep trying. Thanks for any assistance.

    - Practice Makes Perfect

  • codepoit
Are those images 145 and 150 WIDE or HIGH? I am used to seeing something like 145x109 meaning 145wide by 109high...BUT, the way Cory worded it to begin with is 150 HIGH by 126 WIDE. Beyond that...just keep trying, making sure you upload at least the medium and thumbnail size versions.

    - I'm Special!

  • Subdude
OK I think I did it... drum roll please!  Here I am Maybe....

    - Woo Hoo!!

  • cltgolf
Codepoit,  Thank you for your assistance. For anyone else having problems, make sure to pay attention to the H X W and don't mix them up.  Thanks again.

  • Subdude
    O yeah.....That's me right there....just out of focus enough to look good...  ;-}

    Cool!

Thanks Codepoit.  I had the H X W backwards.  Once I figured that out, it worked.

  • codepoit
Maybe one of the editors can add the following text to this main entry, and then bump the entire entry back to the front page?

When you upload your avatar image, make sure of the following:

    • maximum height is less than or equal to 150 px
    • maximum width is less than or equal to 126 px
    • upload this image as both medium display resolution and thumbnail

    - I'm Special!

  • austinspace
Way to go, TYD! It's cool to check this post out again to see more pix appear. Yeah, I'm talking to YOU, tbell! And now, to bump this baby up again!

Ok, this is a great idea; I'm having as much trouble as everyone else did.  My photo is uploaded and is in my pics, but I can't get it in my preferences.  Drop box says none.  I don't know how to make the pic smaller; maybe that's my problem.  HELP!

    - Ms.N

  • KayN
I went back and did a hi-res upload; says it was saved, but drop down still says none.  Don't know what else to do.

    - Ms.N

  • austinspace
ah, there's the rub! It's too big. If you email me I can reply with a resized version, if you like. May I suggest some photo editing software? The best and cheapest is Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is usually pretty cheap (and if you've bought a printer or scanner lately they often include it for free on the install disk). It's even cheaper if you know a student at a college--the bookstore probably has it for less than $50.
