Harriet, I don't claim to be a botanist (but my first-generation-off-the-mountain mother-in-law is darned close to one) & this is definitely a Popup LinkMountain Laurel - state flower of Pennsylvania & blooms all over the eastern mountains. There may, of course, be other varieties which may account for the different color & blossom shape in your photo? And while we're at state flowers, here's one of my favorites, the NC State flower, the Popup LinkDogwood. :-)

  • I am waiting for the mountain laurel to come in to bloom up in the Shenandoah Nat'l Park.  I was up there last weekend looking for wildflowers, but it has been too cold.

Hi, bbronnen - when it does, can you get a picture so we can see how it compares?  Thanks :-)

  • Nice shots, sball--like the droplets on the dogwood shot especially...

Thanks sball, yours looks more like what I've seen in the mountains around here. There was an elderly lady there who said it was a laurel, but I've never seen a bright orange one. Your dogwood looks different from mine, but I'm sure there are varieties. Nice shots by the way.

Both are good shots. I like the contrast - white on green - of Dogwood.

Good shots!  The dogwood I'm used to seeing is a bit larger; guess that's another case of things being different everywhere you go.

Nice shots.  the dogwood is beautiful.  Our MtLaurel in MA looks the same as yours 'cept it's not out yet. (I don't think)
