Study in Rose

Inspired by the beautiful closeups some of you post and the beautiful bouquet I received), decided to try my hand (and my little Olympus D-40) at getting this right. So, all you closeup wizards: Here was my  Popup LinkRose close up. And although I didn't change any settings or technique as far as I could tell, the second pic was much  Popup Linksofter. What would cause the difference in results? Maybe I just got a little closer than the first shot?

What do you think of this Popup Linkcomposition? (Personally I think there's something wrong with the lighting?) Popup LinkBetter?

Did I try to squeeze to much into Popup Linkthis one and Popup Linkthis other one?

Thanks in advance for some blunt feedback & advice :-)

  • I'm not an expert, but it looks like your using too harsh a lighting source. Maybe reflecting the light off a peice of buff paper would help.

  • rose close up is my fav all around. 'composition' is too bright, and I would have maybe cropped out the black spot in the bottom center, with more of the green frond on the top. 'Better' is better but still too much light. I do like the cluster of many on 'this other one?' I would have taken out that bit of green on the top though. Ohhhh I like this being honest thing! ;)

  • nicely done ...  I really think its the camera compensating for the light and probable lack of filters....  on your point and shoot... you probably need to shoot macro with the light behind you and possibly use your flash for fill....  then again ... what does an old surferguy know bout picture taking.....

I didn't care for the shadows in this one; IMHO an equal amount of light would have made it better.  Looks like the flash bounced back in composition; better is better.  This other one is almost perfect; like TTEOLM said, crop the green out, and IMHO the upper right hand rose has too much light.  Rose close up is the fav here!  But, like SG, what do I know about taking pics?  I don't know the "official mumbo-jumbo"; just what I see.

  • "Rose Up Close" is very good. "Softer" is probably softer because it is slightly out of focus. However, the soft focus gives it an etherial, almost dreamlike quality. You probably did it by moving in closer than the camera can focus. Very nice technique, whether done intentionally or by accident. I like it best. "This One" and "This Other One" I like very much. I enjoy the way all the roses caress one another. "Composition" is out of balance. Too much weight on the bottom. And finally, "Better" is technically well done. However, it looks sorta like a greeting card.

Keep shooting. Keep trying new things and keep asking questions. You have a good eye. Above all, enjoy what you do. And keep sharing!

don't ask me about technical--i'm way novice around here in comparison to the others on here.  but anyway-i am drawn to color.
I do like this other one as well-it reminds me of a wedding bouquet.

  • I like the individual rose shots the best. The others seem to busy for me, but I'm a simple kind of person to begin with.  I think the lighting is too harsh on composition and better. But I do really like rose up close and softer :)

  • Shall, I don't know what kind of lighting you used but try lights from two different angles to avoid shadows.
For some cheap photo lamps get two clamp on lamps and use GE Reveal Bulbs. Their color temperature is almost Daylight. And like UV said, if they are too harsh alone try reflecting them off some posterboard.

  • I agree that the light is too harsh. I suggest trying an old trick from a days past. Be advised, I haven't tried this witha digital point and shoot camera, but it may help. Put a piece of single ply toilet paper over your on camera flash. It should soften the light some. Lol, it's about as cheap a trick as you can get!
