The traffic's terrible, the city stinks, the streets are dirty, the weather's hot and wet, I don't speak the language. But the food is awesome, the people are warm, the city never sleeps.

From one window of the apartment, you'll see new highrises.

From the other, the slums. Mumbai is a city of contrasts, and I like it.

Mumbai's yellow-topped cabs are as distinctive as NYC's or London's.
Churchgate rail station during evening rush hour.
Most buildings look like these.
Brave or stupid?
The Taj Hotel
Tugging at Apollo Bandar, a small port next to the Gateway of India.
Waiting at Victoria Terminus, one of Mumbai's busiest rail stations.
A woman restin' her bones at Marine Drive, watching the cars roll by.
Warden Road, where Mom grew up.
Ghosts

Next on the list: Bangalore, Mysore and Ooty. One of these days...

Love the Taj Hotel photo. Stupid is the answer to the bicyclist. The waiting photo has a seedy feeling about it. Good post.

Just for us Untravelled, you are talking about Mumbai (Bombay) India right? Looking forward to Bangalore and Ooty but I don't want to see Mysore :)

Love the contrasts in the panos! Taj Hotel is absolutely gorgeous! I am SO GLAD I don't have to be in that rail station......

Amazing travelogue--I was most struck by the typical building...totally devoid of architectual creativity. And the "waiting" shot was very good, too--well, they were all very good! I'm curious, though--I was surprised to see some references still to the British Empire days like Victoria Terminus--keeping those names are a tough reminder, aren't they?

AnyMoose - Correct, it's Mumbai, India.
austinspace - They changed the British names decades ago, but the English-speaking crowd still refer to places in the old colonial names! "VT" is easier to remember than "Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus", and "Warden Rd" is easier than "Bhulabai Desai Road" :-)
