Hummingbird Migration

We had so many hummingbirds migrate through here last fall that we had three feeders up, and had to refill them all at least twice, sometimes three times a day!  Sometimes we would have 100 birds at a time, no kidding!  My husband would stand with his finger on the feeder, and they got where they would land on his finger to drink! They got so used to us, that they would buzz all around my head while I was filling feeders.  We would sit on the deck, even with the dogs, and they were just fearless how they were all over us. It was just the most amazing thing I have ever experienced!  They came through in September, and were here for about a month.  I can't wait to see if they stop back by our watering hole this spring on their way back north! (Yes number 5 is blurry, but I liked it anyway!)

I am in an obscure piece of paradise on Bull Shoals Lake in Ozark County, Missouri. Two miles north of the Arkansas line. We bought this place in the 70's, but just moved back last summer after getting tired of living in the hurricane alley on the panhandle of Florida. Check out my dog... we are all hillbillies now! LOL!

Oh, I'm jealous! These are great! I've had one sit on my hand before, but didn't get a shot of it. That must have been awesome to watch that many at one time! I wouldn't have known where to aim my camera! Thanks for these!

I love them. I am new around here and just a beginner. Maybe I'll get brave enough to post soon. BTW - Used to vacation around Mt. Home area. I know where you are. We actually used to get quite a few hummingbirds in our area. Wish I could have gotten a pic on the day I watched one try to nest in a guy's Afro.

I did some reading up on HB's after this on wikipedia(links) and found that preying mantis can actually bring a HB down! http://www.hummingbirdsociety.org/HB101/HB101.asp (click predators) theres a photo

From what my books say, have your feeders up about mid March for your area. As many as passed through for you last year you can bet they will be back.

I'll be ready! I am stockpiling sugar now! LOL! I just hope some will stay over the summer, would love to be able to observe and shoot some nesting. Mr Wiz that is an awsome site, have bookmarked it, will be on the lookout for preying mantis!
