We have spent the last two weekends in the Mt. Washington Wilderness. My family has enjoyed this area since my mom was a little girl. It was devestated by a 90,000 acre forest fire in September 2003, destroying some beautiful places. This is our first hike into the Corbett Snow Park meadow since the fire. It was once surrounded by fir and pine trees with majestic old cottonwoods standing in the middle. The cottonwoods would normally be a vibrant yellow, they have no leaves and never will again. It was heartbreaking.

  • Good job with the challenge (love the lady puppy!) and the slideshow was very poignant. Maybe the trees will come back more than you think...maybe?

  • The B and B burn was interesting to say the least. We always stop at Corbet to let the dog out and stretch the legs on the way over to Madras. It's about the half way point for us. In a way it was a shame to see that fire but it was much needed. All of that beetle kill pine needed to go and it time things will be much better because of the fire. If you took off and followed the dirt road back west from the snow park I'm sure you ran into the "islands" of green back in there. It is amazing the way those fires run and then jump over places.

  • Yep, Classy, we were all over the place both weekends. Not a road or trail we haven't hit,it was just our first time into the meadow & it kills me to see the old cottonwoods and aspens gone, that weren't bothered by the beetle kill. Fire was the best thing for alot of that area, but it doesn't make it any easier to see. It covers such a massive amount of ground. The islands of green are truly like some kind of oasis out there! LOL Peachy, I eliminated a pic of my desk because the dust did show on it!

  • Love the photos of the forest. Great work showing the aftermath. When I was in high school 20 years ago there was a huge fire in Yellowstone. Some of my favorite places there burnt badly and I was afraid that recovery would take a long time. The ash from the fire though rejuvenates the soil and things grow very quickly afterwards, especially since the sun can now reach the ground again. In ten or so years it'll look like a forest again, just shorter trees.

  • =) Thanks,Photorogue! We told our kids that by the time they are adults we won't be able to see through the trees! It will be neat seeing it grow. Thanks all!

Great job on the theme shots. Love the dog, have those in my living room too. Love the slideshow. Being from Nevada there are lots of burn areas around where I lived. It is always so sad, but like everyone has said it helps the area. And will grow back. :o)

  • The slideshow is very interesting... loved the way you framed the #5 shot with the trees. Everything is cyclical... I am sure the fire is just part of the natural order of things? As for your house shots... loved your dog, and see you too are an antique lover! Nice shootin!
