Looking Down & Back At My Ole Pal

By dcraton written 12/15/06 10:44 AM, published 12/15/06 8:49 PM

My Ole Pal He was born with a deformed right front leg.  His ears weren't perfect.  He was large for a Dalmatian and thought he was a 76 lb. lap dog.  He got hair everywhere and I love to wear black.  But, he was our pal and bud for 12 years.  He passed last year and this was one of my last shots of him probably wanting a bone or treat or a butt rub or back scratch or his favorite, a scratch behind the cockeyed ear.  I miss him.  But everytime I see this pic, I smile.  He was the happiest being I have ever met despite all his imperfections.  This creature loved life, eating, playing, and curling up for a nap.

His original owners were going to put him down at 8 weeks old because he did not meet AKC contest specifications.  Who does?  We took him and loved him and still do.  His name. . .Alex.  I have part of a song posted I wrote for him at http://www.davidcraton.com/mp3/stampede_tc.mp3.

The big goober!

Thanks for sharing your story. Got a bit of a lump in my throat. Sad to think some animals are put down because they don't meet the "standards". So happy you found him. Sounds like he had a very good home. You can see how happy he is in the photo. What a great shot!

thanks for your post. i have a 10 yr old dal and she (noel) is the love of my life. i totally got teary-eyed reading your story because my little girl suffers from arthritis in her hind legs. she still has the energy of a pup on her good days. thanks, again, for the post - from one dalmation lover to the next. mine was the runt of the litter! i love your pic. i thought it captured alex beautifully!

  • fatcatxcon

You're proof positive that love doesn't require papers or awards. Why can't more people figure out what real love is? Nice picture! He IS PERFECT! And still near you.
