A Study in Natural Lighting .... and LOMO

I set out one day to practice taking shots with my built in flash (because the camera's still a bit new.) Stone Mountain has a nice "plantation" area with old buildings and antique furniture, which I guessed would make for half decent subject matter.

The rooms are pretty dark - in keeping with the Civil War'ish time period - so these shots are my attempt to balance the natural light coming through the windows with the flash to get a balanced shot. Here's a couple that I thought were worth sharing.

Then, all this LOMO talk got me thinking of giving them a more vintage look. So here are those.

Finally, a couple was sharing a romantic afternoon - so I shot 'em.

  • Really a nice job on the natural light shots. Those are tough conditions when you have that little light to work with.

You did good considering the conditions! At least you're experimenting! I really like the first table shot.

The unedited version of the couple shot was nice, but there was this nice bright shiny red and silver Diet Coke can to the right of her purse (behind and between them) and a bright yellow bag of pretzels. I was debating on editing them out, but with the B&W and the grain, they disappeared magically on there own!!

  • Great shots. You did a good job balancing the flash with the natural light, it doesn't have that washed out look that the flash usual gives. How did you do that? I also liked the couple shot.

Well, it helped that there were no other tourists in the house at the time, so I tried about 15 different settings until it started to look about right, then I could kinda guess from room to room about how much light I needed and took 2 or 3 versions of each shot. But basically, I set the exposure slow enough to let in light, but fast enough so that the window didn't wash out, and then I reduced my flash power to next-to-nothing. (Just enough so things didn't look back lit.)

  • well done! I think I prefer the color versions just because they're subtle enough on their own without having to desaturate them. The couple shot is quite nice, too!
