Hummingbird Setup

OK... first off... Someone on here likes to give me a bad time about how I cheat to get close to hummingbirds. Penny, you know who you are ;-) I have a feeling Penny keeps seeing a setup something like Popup LinkTHIS as what I'm using. It's not true. The majority of my shots are hand held from about five feet away.

I do have other bird friends in the yard. Two of them are a pair of blue jays. The female is a real kick. She loves peanuts (non salted - in the shell please). She will sit on the phone line over the deck by the kitchen window and bounce up and down on the line to get my attention so I will come out to feed her. I stoop down and set the peanut on the top step of the deck and move my hand about 4" away and she will fly down to the ground, hop up the steps and grab the peanut. So far no luck on getting her to take it out of my hand but I think it will happen. Anyway... Popup LinkFEMALE JAY watching and waiting for her peanut.

  • Thanks. I don't have as much patience as she does. She was sitting there waiting for her peanut and putting up with me and the camera.

  • Patience must be the key....something I don't have too much of...........like the close up of the female/with all her bright colors.

  • Penny, I agree...I think that's what he really does for those shots! Funny! And you're such a softy...at the beck and call of a jay. Good work.

  • Beautiful bluejay shot. I have about 15 jays that come for peanuts every morning. If I am not out there on time they sure make a racket. How do you tell the males from the females? Certain distinguishing marks?

  • Thanks all. I don't use that setup. Really I don't ;-) In the variety I have here in the valley the females have a lot more gray in them and the patch on their back it gray. On the males the patch is a brown - bronze color. We have Stellar's Jays up in the mountains and they have a whole different look. The Male has cool head gear and face markings.

  • I don't know how many varieties of them there are. I know the two we have here in Oregon are different than the ones that a friend of mine in AL has sent me shots of.

Fantastic shot of the jay (both of them!)! I don't know if I've ever seen a female here; the ones that are here are kinda like the male you posted, but they aren't black, blue and white; they're all blue and white. Thanks for the laugh on the hummer set up! That was cute! I can imagine Penny doing that.....

Wow, I didn't realize that jays looked different in different areas, but that is definitely different than I'm used too.
