During my Manhattan lunch hour, I find peace, tranquility and serenity in churches just blocks from my office.  The three churches featured here were all originally built in the 1800s and stood as detached country churches.  The first two churches have monasteries attached to them, span the entire block, have inside courtyard garden sanctuaries with fountains and have functioning soup kitchens that were established during the depression.  All of the churches have masses everyday in the morning and during lunch hour.

Neat old downtown churches. This is what makes cities so interesting. When I lived in Vancouver during the summers of my college years, I loved exploring the old buildings.

  • very cool! Wow, they're really surrounded by buildings, aren't they? I'm so used to my town, where a church takes up an entire block or more. I really liked the glimpse of some ghost signs in the Holy Innocents Front View--those old advertisements are all over my town.
