Port Angeles Washington and The Olympic National Park

When I first saw Port Angeles, WA, I knew that this is where I'd retire. I fell in love with it's beauty instantly. PA (as we call it) is located on the upper Olympic peninsula and only a few miles from the most northwest point in the lower 48 states (Neah Bay). To the north is the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Victoria Canada is only 20 miles across. To the south is the Olympic MountainsPopup LinkView of Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park and from one of the country's largest natural spits the view is awesome. Storms from the north / northwest tend to travel through the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the cloud formations are sometimes spectacularPopup LinkClouds over strait

The waterfront trail offers beautiful views of the harbor Popup LinkView of harbor and from the pier, the views are spectacular in all directions. From Port Angeles, you can access The Olympic National Park from several points and all are within 2-3 hours away. The main entrance is located in Port Angeles and allows access to Hurricane ridge. Lake Crescent is situated in the Park and only 20 minutes from PA. Popup LinkLake Crescent
Well that's a quick tour of where I live and I hope you enjoy it. I'll be doing photo-stories on the Hoh Rain forest (one of the few temperate rain forests in the US)where the annual rainfall averages 145 inches year and as high as 240 inches, and on the coastal part of the Olympic National Park, specifically Ruby Beach.

  • I thought "View of Hurricane Ridge" was a great pic, until I opened "Pier." Not that Ridge isn't good, but Pier is a great photo. The clarity of the tower really seems to stand out. Did you alter it somehow?

The view of Hurricane Ridge is lovely, but the clouds over straits is awesome.

  • The image of the pier was processed through Neat Image to remove the noise and then altered in photoshop. I converted it to black and white and used a gaussian blur. I was happy with the results especially the clouds. They seem to have a soft glow. The clouds over the Strait image was actually taken at about noon time. I played with the contrast and brightness until I achieved something that looked late afternoon / twilight. I'm really new to digital photography. I shot film until about 6 months ago, mostly Black & White. I must confess, I'm having fun with this digital stuff! Thanks for the positive comments, it motivates me more than you know!

  • I'm amazed. I was positive at least some of them were film. Hurricane Ridge, Pier and Lake Crescent are some of the best I've seen here. And B&W--great choice.

  • The color was there but enhanced in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I think I went into Enhance - Adjust Hue and saturation and just played around with the saturation a bit. Then I adjusted the brightness and contrast until I liked what I was seeing. I'm still learning this Photoshop stuff but having a lot of fun with it. Thanks for the positive comments!

  • I shot film for most of my life and swore that I'd never go digital until I visited a friend of mine who has a portrait studio here in Port Angeles. He and I where some of the last hold outs and were convinced that film was the best medium and that digital still had a long way to go. I was admiring his work when he told me that it was all taken with his Canon 20D. I was amazed! It didn't take long for me to sell off some of my equipment and buy my Maxxum 7D. I still own a Mamiya RZ67, which I plan to use as a studio camera, but the days of spending hours in the darkroom are over for me. I'm much more comfortable sitting in front of my computer and processing my images in Photoshop. Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback.

Spent a week up there and in BC hiking. I didn't want to come back home. Lake Cresent called to me, I love looking at my photos of it when I'm in the mood to go down memory lane. Thanks for the look through someone elses eyes.

  • Glad you enjoyed it. It's really an awesome lake and I've just begun to document it in pictures. I need to spend a day or two just shooting the lake. And then there's the rest of the Olympics. Wow, it's gonna take some time!
