Let me give you a little background on this one. I have more than once expressed my fear of snakes here, and Rockey always says they are another part of nature. Nature shots are my thing, so, when I took some people to see Wildasin's church and cemetary, which I have posted here several times, I came across not 1 but 3 large black snakes. I have seen snakes before in the wild of course, but I have never photographed one. I thought about Rockey and went to work with the camera and this is the result:

This snake is about 4 ft. long Popup LinkBlack Snake 1 Popup LinkBlack Snake 1 close up

The 2 snakes in these shots I am guessing are about 5 ft. each. They were laying up against the stone foundation of the old church in the sun. Popup LinkBlack Snake 2 Popup LinkBlack Snake 2 close up  Popup LinkBlack Snake 3  Popup LinkBlack Snake 3 close up

Needless to say, they were into sunning themselves, and did not launch an attack. So here's to you Rock, and now I am going to be more on the lookout for snake shots. I'll still not get too close, but, they aren't so bad after all.

I don't like snakes but I'm not afraid of them like wasps. Funny thing, one time, I was under my aunt's house working on her water pipes, it's real low, crawling on your belly low, and when I get done and crawl out she asks "Did you see that big snake that stays under there?". I asked why she didn't tell me before and she said she was afraid I might not go under. She was right! Family....arrrgh!!!!!

  • Great pictures, and congrats on facing your fears. Snakes sure do have a bad reputation, but for wrong reasons... They truly are good for the environment... It is a good sign of a balanced ecosystem. Be happy they are there:) Nice shooting....

Great shots, you can count the scales. They scare me too, but we have them in the barn and the garage to eat the mice. As long as they don't jump out at me I am fine. :o)

AHHHHHH!!!!!!! I always speedwalk past the reptiles exhibit at any zoo or place that might have one. One time my friends thought it'd be a funny joke to blindfold me singing a Britney Spears song telling me they were taking me to see elephants and instead pulling the blindfold off right in front of the biggest snake they had there. Needless to say, I screamed and cried. And yes, I was over the age of 12. These were great shots, but they still made me cringe and squirm in my chair.

  • EEEEEEWWWWWWWW!! I get the "heebie jeebies" just lookin at them, but they are great shots. It's cool you faced your fears though... I shot some snakes last summer - from a distance .. but I don't feel the need to go searching for them. I agree with surferguy - dead snakes are the only good ones! lol
