Noah Grey: Call for Questions

By coryking written 6/4/06 5:28 PM, published 6/4/06 5:28 PM
I am pleased to announce our second interview. Professional photographer Noah Grey has gratefully agreed to an interview with a twist; you ask the questions.

Noah Grey Photography

Self described as "31, Dublin, photographer, writer, musician, programmer, gay, survivor, oddball, and mostly harmless," Mr. Grey was one of the first members of Photographica. His touching stories and excellent photography played a significant role in shaping the future of this website. Without Noah, this website would have taken a very different course.

Like our last interview, you ask the questions. Noah has an excellent website complete with a biography, portfolio, and daily photoblog; don't forget about his new book California.

So, post your questions in the comments below. Sometime mid next week Noah will look them over and answer them.

[editor's note, by coryking] Last Call!

  • Do we post our questions as part of this thread?
    cmcnaught

  • How the heck did I miss this the first time around?
    tetedefromage

  • How do you decide on locations & subjects? Are you going to do more "themed" galleries? Why are a lot of your photos "off center"? Thanks, FO'N

  • @ fleetofnuns: great questions. you should register here at photographica... @ Chris: yes. post questions as comments here...
    codepoit I'm Special!

  • Questions: Is Noah Grey your real name? If the production of Dr. Pepper came to an end, what would you turn to next? Which came first and what is your earliest childhood memory of it? ~Sketching ~Music ~Writing ~Photography
Blizzard I want to pull your teeth

  • *Noah*..... What is the ONE lasting impression you want to leave in your photos? Are you coming back to see me in SA?? :oP You have mastered so many creative outlets--Is there another area of talent you wish to explore that you haven't yet?
    Beholden ummmm

  • Are you a self taught photographer or did you have a mentor that showed you the ropes? What inspires you?
    lilbit

  • Do you ever find yourself in a "photo funk", and, if so, how do you get out of it?
    KayN Ms.N

  • Noah, Do You Have A Favorite Walk Around Lens...If So What Is It?
    ROCKADEE NATURE RULES!!!

  • Your black and white photos are stunning -- they're crisp but have distinct grain and the tonal range is perfect: Would you give a brief walk through your work flow?
    wilk      Oh Shoot

  • I was wondering the same thing as wilk, about the black & whites and your work flow? those are magnificent to say the least.
    northstar

  • Professional ... or not.. as in .. "I"... my stuff is just as good as yours... IMO... why or why not..?
    surferguy WoooFrigginHoooo...

  • I don't know if this is a very good question, but I was just browsing through Noah's pictures and this thought popped into my mind: Do you stage many of your pictures? Or have you just mastered capturing the perfect moments?
    photographer365

  • You have many creative outlets... which do you get the greatest satisfaction from?
    MudMistress Always Watching You...

  • To get your results, do you rely on lighting (natural, Or artificial), or do you rely on dark-room/computer manipulation.

  • I've had people (family and friends mostly) tell me that my photos are "incredible, you should sell them." How do you as a photographer know if photos are really art? Or if people are just being nice? At what point did you evolve from a person who takes photos (my stage) to a photographer and then to an artist?
    cmcnaught

  • As an artist do you find yourself drifting away from one form of media to another, devoting your creative forces souly to the media at hand. Or do you try to divide up your time more equally? and does everyone in Dublin really cook their meat till it is like leather?
    Jump1ok Misunderstood

  • I noticed that most of your photographs on the website have a low key and or a lomo quality. Is this a simply a theme for this website or is this a personal preference for this style?
Photo Yaloo In tune with the camera.

  • Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you.....digital camera, film camera? Make of camera, pixel count? Lens..or even postwork...what kind of program to edit in?
    chef009 time to change

  • What made you take the leap into professional photography? I've had several people tell be to go professional, but I have no intention to do so. I'm afraid I'll lose the joy if it becomes work.
Photo Yaloo In tune with the camera.

  • I love your B&W work and you also have some color. What makes you choose to shot something in B&W over color? How do you know that a photo is really good? There are times when everyone is telling me that a picture is good, but I am not satisfied with it.
    Lidljo Flowers are happiness...

  • I just finished looking at the your pictures and must confess that most of everyone I viewed was in B/W, why is this? All B/W was depressing to me, is this your intent with your pictures..they seemed to me as though the person is in a 'big black hole' and is trying to find their way out. I have seen B/W by different photographers, both pro and non, that are really exceptional work and do not leave me with such a depressing feel about them. As to why some make it in this field while others whose work may appear to be just as well talented, if not more so, to me is all in the timing and how you sell yourself. I say this because of what I have seen in sports.....there are individuals who have exceptional talent/ability for the sport but maybe because of personality conflict, peer pressure to fit in (not be yourself), etc.,just a lot of different factors to work through..there will be several talented people who do not make in the 'big world' as some people call it. Hope this has made sense.

  • My question: I focus on the emotion and atmosphere of an image, technical quality is secondary. What is your opinion?
    Neon ignis fatuus

  • I like the way you seem to focus on the eye's of your subject in many of your portrait shots. Do you make an effort to do this or is it just a natural behavior talent that happens?
    Jump1ok Misunderstood

  • How have your different creative outlets affected each other? For example, how has photography influenced your music and vice versa?...and has it made you a better web developer?
    bleustudios

  • Which of your talents is most important to you or I might ask which one would you give up if you had to give up one? Another question is do you plan and seek the photographs that you take or do you capture them when they come to you or occur?
    Lidljo Flowers are happiness...

  • Do you use or have used large format cameras? When shooting in B&W do you see Black and white through the lens like I do Minds eye? How much interaction or contact do you have with the individuals in your shoot or is it a distance affair?
    ShadesofBlueArt Art is What ?

  • Forgive me but I am so new at this...but after all of the days...years spent taking pictures, was there a defining moment when you knew that it was time to take pictures professionally or was it a gradual transition?
    jam9663 ain

  • I see all the questions that I want to ask had already been asked by some of the members above so the only question I left is, what is your favourite ice cream flavour? ( include topping) :)
    DGitAL Is my Heart, here?

  • favorite photographer...and musical artist...who do you admire?
    bleustudios

  • In my best James Lipton voice.... ~ What is your favorite word? ~ What is your least favorite word? ~ What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? ~ What turns you off? ~ What is your favorite curse word? ~ What sound or noise do you love? ~ What sound or noise do you hate? ~ What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? ~ What profession would you not like to do? ~ If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
Blizzard I want to pull your teeth

  • The above was me, I couldn't get signed in so I will repost as me Noah, Before you put your work "out there". Do you have it critiqued by someone else, (Friends, family, other photogs.) Or do you just go with what your heart tells you is right?
    AnyMoose Hero Still a Moose

  • In general, during a session, how many pics would you say you take to find "the right one"? Example: on average, if you took 100 shots of a subject, how many would you consider for showing?
    jojames1

  • Can you tell by the images you produce if you were manic or depressive at the time? Or do you find you only take photos during one of those phases? Is photography your escape from your mind...or a way of harnessing your emotions?
    jojames1

  • On your bio, you expressed that you are bipolar. If you could trade your highs and lows for life lived on the even keel, would you? Do you think being bipolar has had a positive or negative effect on your ability to express yourself through your art?
