Don't Tread On Me!

I found this Popup LinkBad Boy on the edge of the road next to a parking lot at the lake. He was very much alive and very active, but I think he was hit by a car as he has a spot of blood on his side, which is not seen in this photo, and the snakes tougue is hanging out.

I think Rockey will attest that, as colorful as this one is, it is best left alone. The copperhead is the only poisonous snake in my area, though the bite is not fatal, it can be painful and does require medical attention.

Almost feel sorry for the creature, with his tongue hanging out and all - then I remembered it's a snake! Nice shot.

  • I don't remember seeing a copperhead that orange and bright. The ones I see around here are more dull in color.

Nice shot! I saw my first live copperhead last sunday. He was in my yard so my husband took care of him. Hadn't seen them around the house before. Hope there aren't any more. :o)

nice shot Paul.........now run it over, I only say that because as a kid I would've ran out in the street and tried to pick it up...and that wouldn't be such a good idea.

  • Sorry, folks, that looks like a King Snake!!! US poisonous snakes are all (except for the Coral, a VERY RARE BIRD) pit vipers, and they have a larger arrow head shaped head, very separate from the body. This poor King snake probably had mouse blood on his side, he's a constrictor and great around rodents. Also, Copperheads are dull colored.

  • I can't attest to whether it is or isn't a copperhead. I haven't seen one that color, but I do know that there are several different kinds of copperheads. One of my college classmates kept snakes. He had 4 different types of copperheads all varying in size, length and venom. However, they were all a dull brownish gray.
