Last night I went to the Mesquite (TX)Rodeo wanting to get some action shots. Wow! There were lots of opportunities and I captured dozens of shots. I picked through the scores of photos I got and am presenting them here. Action photography is a whole different scene than photographing landscapes and portraits, but the rewards are tremedous. Hopefully, withing the next couple of days, I will have a more complete set on my website. Enjoy!

Fantastic shots, were you outside? I am a huge PBR fan and the events I have attended have been inside, and I have always wanted to attend an outside rodeo for the pics. The lighting would be so much better! The bareback riding shots are my favorites. Awesome set, post your web again if you could so that I can access the rest when you get them loaded!

25, 26, 27 were my favorites....young men didn't look like they wanted to look too clownish...had to keep their looks in place....wonderful action shots!

WOW!!! Every one is amazing!! Action shots are something I've never been able to pull off well. Watch out....some rodeo magazine person's gonna surf by this page and offer you too much money ;-) 13's funny......"Whew! ok enough of that, let's just lie down here and rest for a bit."

I've considered trying to get some shots at a rodeo, but like bugaboo said, I've been afraid the lighting wouldn't be good enough in a covered arena. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot after all. It looks like it was a lot of fun.

  • bugaboo/SaxGuy the shots were all taken indoors. The lighting was the typical mercury vapor type lights, but I did a custom white balance adjustment on the cam. I used the aperture priority and ISO 800 to get speeds between roughly 1/80th sec to maybe 1/150 sec which was excellent for stopping most action. Also, I have to admit, I took LOTS of shots with a bunch of throw aways. There are a bunch more that I saved, but actually too many for my personal website...but you can go to http://photos.yahoo.com/jackmion@sbcglobal.net and view what I have...some are better than others...but it was a lot of fun doing it.

This is good to know, since I live 2 miles down the street from an equestrian center.

  • great shots. stopping the action is really tough. i shot the PBR when it came to my town in january. it was a real challenge, but so much fun and very rewarding when you get the shot! maybe i'll post my images too.
