Framing your prints

There were a couple of discussions on creating frames for your images with software - for those of us who like prints, I found a tutorial on how to mat your photos "in real life"

How I Cut a Mat

I haven't had a chance to try this myself and it does talk about buying a "real" mat cutter to get the beveled edges.

being still in high school, i have had to cut about a dozen of museum grade white board foamy stuff. for that its a pain and quite tricky. we use beveled edges for the inside of the board. so obviously, we have one of the knives to do so...but i strongly sugest if you are going to do alot of mat cutting, invest in a kit that has a ruler and a bar to place your knife on. thats what i used at school and at Moore College of Art during the summer. i can't imagine it any other way! lol! for matting drawings and stuff, we just use poster/railroad paper. for all my art classes, we use a 2 inch border all the way around and an extra half inch on the bottom of the mat. thats my experience.

I worked in a frame shop for many years and have cut hundreds of mats. Although you could invest in a mat cutter [ good ones run 500-1000$] there are museum grade [8ply] acid free pre-cut mats in just about any size you could want. Even a commercial grade cutter won't cut 8ply. And you would have to cut alot of mats to make your money back. Hope this suggestion helps. Candice
