So I'm out at the grill tonight and feel Popup Linkhungry eyes
on me. Now typically, once I see a perfect photo op, the subjects take flight the minute I move for my camera. Well, not tonight! I got to set up my rig and snap pictures for an hour while mom and dad Martin Popup Linkfed their little ones.. I love the Popup Linkchoreography of baby birds, and the Popup Linkhigh-speed drops by the parents. And this was a great lesson in parenting.. I DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!
Popup LinkThis is what's for dinner tonight!. So then we had our dinner and the Martins flew away. But, since I still had my equipment set up on the deck, I was able to catch Popup Linkthis scene... those birds weren't very happy with that hawk!

Then the Martins reappeared on the neighbors gutter... I attached my 1.4x multiplier and was back in action. Now some of the birds were taking off and Popup Linkmeeting mom in mid-air to beat their siblings to the meal. But mom still made sure that Popup Linkeveryone got their dinner, although Popup Linkhow they remember who's turn it was is a mystery to me.
Popup LinkThis is one of my favorites.. what a beautiful approach.

Spectacular captures, That is too cool! They are Tree Swallows though, Martins are darker kinda purple with dark undersides. But no matter, these are great!!!

Absolutely beautiful. I agree with your choice of a favorite. What camera, lens (other than the 1.4) and settings?

  • Thanks all... Tbell, I used an EOS 20D (with a shamefully dirty sensor), and a Sigma 50-500mm. The first four pictures were shot at 500mm, 1/1000, f5.6 and ISO 400. The rest were 700mm, 1/2000, f8.0 and ISO 400.

  • some of the closer ones, "everyone got their dinner," would be a little more interesting if they were cropped differently. Familiar with the "rule of thirds?" I think if the baby's eye was on the left vertical, just above the lower-left crossing, the picture would be much more interesting. I am an action photographer and really am impressed that you were able to stop the action. were you shooting film? if so, what speed? if it is digital, could you increase the ss and stop the wingtips? Cool work.

  • Thanks seymourmike.. I agree with you on the crop advise. Unfortunately I caught many of these just on the corner due to the way I had my tripod stationed. So a heavy crop would not have left enough to produce a clean resolution. here's the original of the photo you mentioned to show you what I mean: http://www.paxunum.org/IMG_4528.jpg
