The tire on the roof is what made me actually stop.

  • I like your silo, Jay. #1 for me. Gosh, if I stopped everytime I saw a tire on a roof, I'd never get anywhere.

  • Nice shot. A suggestion and an observation. First the suggestion. If you expose for the sky it won't get blown out. Now the observation. You've got some jpeg artifacts on the image. I'm not sure if that's due to overcompression or editing the image too many times. Either will lead to the artifacts in a jpeg image. You can see them in the border of the sky and clouds on the right-hand side of the image. If you're going to do a lot of editing with an image you should work with it as a tiff or Photoshop file, then export it to a jpeg at the highest quality level available (12 in CS2).

  • You might be a redneck if... you have a tire on the roof so the tin panels don't rattle in the wind. Nice shot.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, and thanks Tom. I will try and figure out how to do that (expose for the sky).

I like the shot and I believe that I like the second picture best with just a touch of color.

Really like the silo, but might have cropped out some of the blown roof. You can expose for the sky (or the roof), by focusing on them, pressing the shutter button half way, and then moving your focus to whatever interests you. Or, if it's possible on your camera, you can adjust the EV by a negative 1 to 1.3.

Excellent subject -- I was going to say much the same thing as Tom and tbell. A third option is to get a neutral density filter to use on bright days.

  • Interesting building Jayhuff. The roof seems like a good place to keep a spare to me!
