These scenes from Big Bend National Park were taken about a year ago.  I've been fooling around with tone adjustments:  Let me know what you think.

  • Look like really old photos of the west Wilk. Window and Canyon are my favorites.

I really like the tones used in all of these...very striking. How did you do it?

I live in the desert and I wear tinted sunglasses (brown) this is what the world looks like to me, especially on cloudy days. Awesome. I've played around with using my glasses as filters (polarized) but the first time I tried, it shocked me...so I quit. I love these, btw. Would make a great grouping as decor

I guess some people really liked these, judging from the comments above, but I really don't...Sorry. They are too dark and although the clouds in the last one are neat, the tints don't do anything for me. This of course is just one person's opinion, and I don't usually comment in the negative, but you usually have posted much better things on this site. Maybe it's just my mood tonight! Forgive me.

  • Looks like an interesting place to explore. I thought the composition was very good on all the photos, but I would have liked to have seen them in color. No offense, I'm just a color junkie and the tones didn't appeal to me personally.

I'm with Bruce and Otter, I like color, but I do have to say, if these were for an ad or marketing an old movie, the clarity can't be beat. They are very well done.

  • The grande scene reminds me what might have been hundreds of years ago, just has that feel to it, more so than color version in the thumbnail..And the canyon shot could be from 'the land that time forgot'...I like it.

These are so beautiful, I love the dark mysterious tones and the light is highlighted perfectly. I love all of them!

  • I really liked Canyon, that is an amazing shot! I liked the way Window frames and draws the eye. Casa Grande just looked too dark on my screen, I couldn't find anywhere to focus my eyes on. The tone gives everything a very ancient feel, I like it.

  • I really like the last canyon shot...a LOT. BUT...I don't think I am digging the tone adjustment on any of these. I would LOVE to see that last shot in straight b/w.

  • I really like Window, but the agree with Code (man I hate that) on Canyon in b/w. Casa is just too dark too me. Kept squinting & moving closer to the monitor to see it better.

I like the last one also, Wilk, but would probably like it just as well in B/W. I liked the first one also. I thought the second was dark, at first, but it was my angle on the laptop. Once I sat up it was better. Overall, I'd say I liked them all but the last is the only one that really did it for me. But don't get discouraged and keep on trying!

  • Very dark, foreboding, mysterious, and casa is almost nightmarish, but in a good way. I LOVE the mood of these... a unique presentation. I like the gold tones on the water in the last shot.

  • You did some fun stuff with these. I noticed people saying the casa shot being dark and I agree your foreground needs to be lighter, might use a mask on it to lighten it a bit but keep the sky the same?? Nice shot. As for the last shot I really like it as its a bit on the surreal side with the copper colors. You do have one dark area in the bottom left that draws the eye away from the picture, might lighten it up, but still really like this one.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I like the thought that I can learn and get better and some of your ideas will help me do that. Again, thanks. And for those who asked, here are the photos in straight black and white: Window Casa Grande Santa Elana

I can't offer advice just say that they were a little dark esp the middle one for my eye. I would like to see where I'm being lead in that image. I would vote for the last image of the three for the mood you set.

I too can not offer advice... just my opinion. I liked them....I agree that Casa was dark but it may look different in a bigger size....I bet. I loved the toned ones better then the b/w ones. I am a color junkie too but if i had to choose the toned was nice and would make a great set to hang on the wall. Ok I will leave with a smile now I gave my two cents worth...hehehe....:)

I seem to like them better the first time around. Maybe because the canyons are closer to that warm color.
