From the coast trip last week..

The Coquille River Light was the last built on the Oregon coast, completed in 1896. The short 40 ft. tower and small Fourth Order lens served to guide ships across the treacherous bar at the entrance to the river. In those days, the river port of Bandon was a center for shipping the lumber of Oregon's rich forests.

Between the last two which do you like the framing on better?

Man, CS, I was just getting ready to go to bed when you posted. Glad I waited now... love the lighthouses. All are great! As far as the last two, I prefer the second, it shows the base of the lighthouse and grounds it also a little of the river and more of the far bank which puts it more in context.

  • Thanks loweho. I kind of feel the same way but hate the clutter of the modern buildings on the far bank. Will have some more shots of the Cape Blanco house later this week. Kind of funny. Coquille is the lowest in the state and Cape Blanco is the highest sitting one. Sits way up on a cliff. Coquille has a small 4th order lens and Blanco has the big 1st order in it. The two houses are only about 25 miles apart.

This might be a stupid question since I don't know what's out of frame. Could you take the shot from the the direction of the first but at a higher angle to see the base of the lighthouse without showing the buildings? 40ft, that is really short to me it would be a shame not to show how short it is.

  • I like the second better. The foreground in the first is too busy for me.

  • I also like the second frame best, when the first north side opened did not like all of the items in front--takes away from the serenity of the lighthouse.....

Love the second shot better. Lover the tall grass and the drift wood. The lighthouse is simple but very pretty.

  • The driftwood in the first is kind of cluttered and distracting, but in the second, the driftwood and the swaying grass draw your eyes more naturally to the focal point of the picture, the lighthouse. I definately have to say the second one! Great example of how moving just a little bit can change an image quite a bit! p.s. I think the colors are better in the second as well.

I like the second one best also, but when I opened the first one, I thought I liked it best, but then opened the 2nd and decided it was the best of the two IMHO. Great shots, all in all. :o)
