We went to the park just last ThursdayTo hear a good old brass band.
The one we were gonna be hearin’
Is the wonderful
There were other folks there to enjoy ‘em
On
blankets and also on
chairs.
The members all pitched in to
setup
As soon as the whole band was there.
The band then changed into their
costumes
From four score and six years ago.
They sat down and
started up playin'
The grand notes all sweetly did flow.
With eyes closed I started to ponder
The simpler days long gone by
When parks were all filled every Sunday
For
music in the heat of July.
The
tuba would boom like the thunder,
The
piccolo tweet like a bird,
The
trombones' glissandos were gorgeous,
The
clarinets notes could be heard.
The
leader was tellin’ some jokes now,
And
all seemed to be so sublime.
The
old men were dancin’ and prancin’
And havin’ a wonderful time.
I was snorin’ when somebody nudged me
To bring me back from the past
To
kids being pushed by their daddies
And folks
sittin' out on the grass.
I knew I’d been sleepin’ and dreamin’
But oh, it was certainly grand
For the chance to
dream and to
listen
To the
Wonderful Newtonburg Band.
