A few tech bits on this one: Canon 20D Sigma 70-300mm zoom with lens set at 200mm and about 3' from the feeder ISO 200 Camera on manual at 1/100th and F 7.1 Remote shutter switch so as not to shake things Camera set to sequential firing. Ended up with 2 good shots in focus out of a 9 shot sequence.
Here's the EXIF info from the file for anyone that wants it. Like I said, the lens is a Sigma 70-300mm from a distance of about 3 feet. I find I like this lens better than my Canon 100-400mm for hummingbirds. It will let me focus down to under 3' and with the Canon I'm limited to 7'. This causes me to use more zoom so I end up with less DOF. For an under $200 lens it really does a good job and on the small sensor Canon's it's equal to a 112-480mm. OK, THIS is the finest photograph I've seen in my life. Thanks for the EXIF info and lens discussion. Sorry Fabulous (Seattle Skyline Pano). Amazing I could see two photos in one night on Photographica that ring my bell like this one.
I was asked a couple of questions in a pm and want to post the answers here too. May come in handy for others: "The feeder I have up attracts a lot of ants that get into the water, how do I prevent that?" Ants can be a real pain. I use home made moats filled with water on my feeders. You can buy them in some stores or order them on line. Here are a couple of links. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250003342669&category=42349 http://www.backyardbird.com/pararedant.html You fill it with water and hang the feeder from it. Ants don't like to swim. " ... my husband and sister say to just use half sugar, half water for the mix.--That seems like it is too sweet but is what I have been doing...." Way too strong and may be adding to your ant problem. Use a 4 to one mix. One cup of water and 1/4 cup of sugar. This gives you a 20% mix and their natural food is about 21%. Change out the food if it starts to become cloudy. I change mine every 5 to 7 days in the summer.
Honestly, I don't see what's that great about it... heh heh....totally kidding. This is a fantastic photo! I love that out of 9 shots in the sequential shooting only 2 came back in focus. You planned, timed and executed this shot flawlessly. Great work, ClassyShots! We are envious indeed!
