On our return trip towards home, we came to a vista point and the kids stayed in the car while I found a river to shoot. I tried the longer exposure on some of them, but didn't quite get the effect I wanted.
Heavy criticism welcomed here. Please advise in any way. Most were shot on AUTO, a couple on AV. No tripod ( yeah, I know,...that wouldv'e helped.)

Popup LinkRiver 8 This would've been good for the Double challenge.
                  Popup LinkRiver 9 B&W

Getting gas was a normal part of the trip(no, Loweho...gasoline...!) and at one of the stops, I got out and was Popup Linkpaying for it. Matt got out and said Popup LinkLook, Dad!!! . What was he talking about, I wondered. I looked down and saw Popup Linka big bug. He was about 2 inches long on the body alone.  Popup LinkWhat Is It? Matt wanted to squish it... I told him no; I didnt want the guts on my carpet in the van!
Coming home, we again passed by  Popup LinkMt Shasta, and it looked like it was erupting!! What a great trip. Thanks for coming along!

I can't give you any help on the camera settings, but I can say that #7 is a mighty fine shot! I love the wider angle of the shot.....adding the trees in there just made the shot better, IMHO.

  • Nice shots Turbo. Yeah I think for the effect you were looking for you need even longer exposure and YES you would have needed a Tripod or at Least a Bean Bag. To set long exposures you should have set your 20d to TV (Shutter Priority) and then dialed down the speed to maybe a 1/5 of a second or longer. That will give the water that Smooth Dreamy look

Slow or fast these are wonderful!! I think your bug is a giant leaf borer. Love matt's expression! LOL

  • We have alot of those beetles here in LaPine. Not squishing was a good call, they make one heck of a mess! With 3 kids I have seen the aftermath & right now they have eggs! YUCH. love the river shots. 7 & 9 are my faves.

  • River #1 - Really Kool; River #2 & River #3 - bothered by Big Tree in middle of river - Duh! kinda spoils an 'otherwise' Great Scene; River #4 - KOOL! Exciting; River #5 - Kool view of River with Greenery all around; River #6 - Moss-covered Rocks very, VERY KOOL; River #7 - EXTRA KOOL Composition; River #8 - SUPER KOOL Waterfall; River #9 - Sorry, composition is somehow loose & also its hard for me to 'get-into' B&W Nature Shots... ALL REALLY GREAT SHOTS!!!! Ever thought of using against a Bridge Railing OR Tree to brace your body so you can 'lower' shutter speeds for special water effects? Mt. Shasta shot is SUPER KOOL & beautiful!!!!!!

Turbo -- great shots and all are nice. Moose's advice is right on. . . now that you have that high-powered camera it's time to move it off auto and start experimenting with manual. You'll be surprised at how quickly you adjust and train yourself to look at your actual settings during each shot.
