after I showed bugaboo around my old High School, we went tromping up to the local mountains and took some pictures in Ice House Canyon.

I spent the majority of my time playing with shutter speeds and water. I am not that steady and a mono-pod is next on my 'to buy' list. It was a lot of fun to take pictures with someone else (especially since we both have the same camera and the lens we were using was comparable: 70-300) and seeing the difference in results due to style.

While I regaled bugaboo with local history, she helped me learn how to take better pictures. Part by example (very patient) and part by experimenting with me.

  • I liked your experiments. It's fun to play with water in shots like these. Just so you know though, you have slow and fast backwards. The higher the denominator, the faster the shutter speed is. 1/500 of a second is faster than 1/15 of a second. Doesn't detract from the fun shots though.

Ahh, I was thinking of the water speed /in/ the picture - not identifying it by shutter speed. But good point, this is where jargon comes in handy.

  • Good efforts Jessypi! If your gonna be shooting at 1/4 sec you need to use a tripod. Monopods are great, I have a couple monos and tripods, but monopods are more steadying telephoto lenses not for very slow shutter speeds. Just a tip before you buy.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a tripod (cheapy that came with some cameras I bought for my students) and I hate it. I was looking at the trek pod which is a mono-pod but then also snaps out to be a tripod. bugaboo let me try her monopod out, which helped me decided that yes, I do need the tripod...but I also want something I'll use.

  • every one needs a tripod at some point but i made a verrrry handy camera rest out of an old sock( preferably washed ) filled with about $0.50 worth of little dried peas that you can buy in any grocery store. fill it about toe to heel and tie a loose knot in it leaving some room between the peas and the knot so it will firmly cradle your camera at any angle. i use it on my car window sill or roof ( turn engine off and turn the radio down to eliminate vibrations ) or on a fence post, or on a rock ,or log , or on the ground. just hold on to the camera neck strap in case it would get bumped or fall. turn on the self timer ,compose, focus and shoot. with your hands off of the camera when the shutter releases you'll notice a lot less blurring of the stationary objects in the pic especially if you are shooting in low light or low shutter speeds.

I liked the lasr one also. You might try e-bay for a tripod, I had a Bogen that I loved...until my daughter "borrowed" it. Now it's her favorite! Bear and I share a Gitzo..much too heavy for me.
