Do you read a magazine from front to back or back to front? When I pick up a new one for some reason I start thumbing through if from back to front. Why do I ask? Well you are going to get the images from the trip in reverse order ;-) Can't help it. I'm strange. Just ask my wife.

Anyway.. One of the goals on this trip was to stop at Dean Creek and get some elk shots. The Dean  Creek herd is located about 15 miles East of Reedsport, Oregon on Hwy 38. The viewing area is protected from hunters but if the elk wander off over the hill they are fair game. This is not a bad thing. It keeps the herd healthy. Some days the herd is out near the viewing area where they can be seen and other days they will be back in the trees with none to be seen. The day I was coming home they were out and about. The bulls were holding back quite a way but the cows were in pretty close. This time of the year the older bulls tend to group up away from the cows and younger males.

Popup LinkThis young male was in with the other youngsters and Popup Linkcows.  Popup LinkThis may be his mother. They were pretty close together. The males were up the road a way and back closer to the tree line. Popup LinkOne of these two may be the little guys daddy. They were the largest two I saw and were off to the side of the Popup Linkmain group of mature males. The racks are so pretty this time of the year with them covered in velvet.

Hope you enjoy. I know many of you live in places where you don't see these animals. If you ever get the chance they are a site to be seen.

  • Beautiful! Love "main group". I know you are over here in Central Oregon quite often, have you been to the viewing area in Sisters? It is nice but I haven't seen that many bulls there at one time!

  • LaPineian.. Never even noticed that there was a viewing area there. Don't know how I missed it as I drive through there every time I go to mom inlaws in Madras. I'll have to check it out.

  • Thanks Rock. I knew you would like them. The great thing about that place is they are so close to you. The cows and youngsters weren't 40 feet from me. If I wanted one of them to look up to get a shot I would just drag my foot in the gavel on the shoulder of the road to make some noise. They would look up real quick and then go back to eating.

  • Nice Mike. The day Iwas there they were doing a Controled Burn of the grasses in their area.. Seemed weird. But the elk were still there and I got shots.. But smokey ones :( No moose shots?

  • The elk viewing area in Sisters is on the Old Mckenzie Hwy. Almost across from the Sisters High School. They just opened up that scenic pass this last weekend but you can get that far in all year. Don't know if you have ever taken that scenic route. I know you would take some amazing shots.

  • Thanks for the info. We spend a lot of time on the Old McKenzie. Do a lot of camping at Alder Springs and hike into Proxy Falls often. I'm trying to figure how to get a ride with one of the rotary plow jockies so I can get up there while the snow is still higher than most people ever see. I want some shots up at Dee Wright with everything covered in snow all the way to Mt Washington.

  • Great post...the composition in Main is "picture perfect!" We took a poll of all the realtors where I used to work about which direction we thumbed a magazine. There were three of us that were back to front people, and we were all Gemini's. Strange but true... and maybe a little too much time on our hands that day!

  • THat would be amazing. But very cold! Hope you find someone. & then post the pics! Is it state or private maintained? The last time we went over was during the B&B fire. Some neat but horrifying views.

  • State highway dept maintains it. I've been documenting the B and B burn. I shot part of it at one of the snow parks on the main road while it was still smoking. I shoot the same spot once or twice a year to show the comeback.

  • I would love to see some of those shots. My family has been hunting & camping in that area since my mom was a little girl. The 1stdog my hubby & I had, is put to rest up there. She passed on one of our trips to Torso LK. It is neat to see the regrowth in the area & what was left untouched.
