Nice shot Rock. Looks like a scruffy youngster. I've got a scruffy Anna's that I'm guessing is from the last brood. Still pretty small and it's coloring is a mess. I have no idea yet if it's male or female and can't catch it to look under it's tail.. ;-)

Yea, Mike.. She Is A Young Ruby...They Are Feeding Heavy Now. Getting Ready For The Fall Migration. In My Area The Males Leave First At The End Of August And The Females Follow Around The Second Or Third Week In September.

Pretty much the same story here in this part of Oregon on dates and what they are doing. Last year I had 3 Anna's that stayed all winter. It will be interesting to see if any of their young from this year stay too.

Mike, You Were Lucky To Have Them Stay For The Winter...Never Had Them Stay Around Here. I Guess It's Just Too Darn Cold For Them Here...:(

Nice shots, I shot some hummers that weren't near as good!

Great shots, Rock, I was going to ask why she was so scruffy looking but you already answered it.

Rock, Anna's and Costa's are the only two that actually winter in the US. Both winter in AZ and Southern CA. There is a group of Anna's that has been wintering on Vancouver Island for years. Lately they have been expanding their winter range south to include the Willamette Valley here in Oregon. They are tough little kids. I had days in the 20's here last winter with a heat lamp on the feeder to keep it from freezing and they were here eating away. Between the feedings of sugar water they would fly around in the redwood tree next door picking off little bugs.

Thanks For The Info, Mike...I Have Also Heard That Some Rubys Also Winter Over In Florida.

Could very well be true. The hummingbird is one of the few animals that man has done good for in North America. The range and numbers is expanding every year and most of it is due to home feeders. When cane or beet sugar is mixed at the correct 1 part sugar and 4 parts water it is very close to the 21% ratio they find in flowers. As long as no dye is added or the pre-mix red stuff is not used it does them no harm. In areas that suffer from a summer drought and flower die off the feeders are all that keep them alive.

I thought that is so cute how you actually got close enough to take a picture! You must be pretty good!

  • ClassyShots
That is a bummer SG. Maybe next season.

Mike, You Are Correct About The Feeders And Mixture. After I Mix 1 Part Suger With 4 Parts Water I Boil The Suger And Water Together To Remove All The Impurities That's Too Bad, Surf, They Are Fascinating Birds To Watch.

She is beautiful. I am having a blast watching the ones at our place this year. I still can't get a decent pic but I'm getting better.

Love that 1st shot, seems to have her eye on you! Both are beautiful. We have lots of hummers but they haven't bothered w/my feeder yet. Just my flowers & bugs. & no way can I get a shot! Just hafta enjoy the shots here!

  • Penny
Great shots! I actually have them coming to my oriole feeder this year. Usually only my flowers. Not even hummingbird feeders I have put out in the past.

Love how well you captured the irridescence in her wings. Lovely!

  • BusyB1965
Another person in awe of the hummers....they are coming around the feeder I have out, but so far have not been able to get a good picture, and am like Peachy, enjoy watching them. Are there people out there who 'band' these in order to track their journies, etc.

    - Blessings

  • KayN
Glad you explained that she's probably a "wee tike".....I thought you had bought an awfully big feeder! Love these shots, Rock!

Great shots, she does look tiny. I have 2 visiting my feeder finally. :o)

  • Andrea
Simply fabuolous shots, Rock! I'm amazed! I'm never able to capture them sitting still at our feeder. I'm always too slow and they like to dart around too much.

    - Hi, How are you?

  • Lidljo
Great job both of you hummingbird guys - Rock and Classy. You both take wonderful bird shots.

    - Flowers are happiness...
