Minnesota State Fair 2006 Finale

This is the last of my images from the 2006 Minnesota State Fair.  I'm interested in your opinion.  Do you prefer the Popup Linkblack & white or Popup Linkcolor version?

I was attracted to the light streaming in at the far end of the barn.  And who can resist all those steel girders.

Because of the desire to bring out some of the details in the shadows without blowing out the highlights I did work this a little in CS2.  Nothing extreme, just a little masking.

I prefer the color version. I can't pinpoint why, I just do.

Im breaking every SG rule of color... written on the pilings under the pier... but.. I like the B and W better... yep...

I like the picture in both versions, but the color I tend to like a bit more. Good stuff.

    - I want to pull your teeth

I like both. The color almost looks sepia. I am a big fan of Black and White though, so if I had to choose, I would ultimately go with that one...but dang I like the color one also.

  • tomnorth
You're right, it does look sepia. That was the real color though. Must have been all the hay dust floating in the air.

    - One size does not fit all

  • KayN
I like the color version better; the b/w seems to be more grainy.........

I like the B&W, because it gives it the look of a 1940s airplane hangar.

    - Mmmmmm... Multiplicative

  • USMACyclist
I'm going with the B&W because in my opinion the red letters of the "no smoking" sign in the color version really draws too much attention. I don't think the focus of this shot is the sign. Withdrawing the color makes it easier for the eye to travel down the V shape of the barn to where the light is coming in.

  • Sopris
    Color for me!

  • Bobby
For this shot I like B&W the best....

  • Anonymous Hero
    I can't decide....I really like both.

  • Penny
I like the b&w the best but I can't get past that I want to see more of the picture. It pulls your eyes to the back of the building and I feel we should see a door or something. Basically it leaves me wanting to see more.

Good point. In retrospect I think I should have moved closer to the light to take the shot.

    - One size does not fit all

  • Penny
The shot is nice but like I said I want to scroll down to see the rest.

    - Smile

  • Lidljo
Tom, I had to look about five times to decide, but I think I would go with the color version. I agree with Penny's statement about wanting to see more, but I also thought about seeing less - I think that I might have tried to crop a little more off the bottom.

    - Flowers are happiness...

  • LaPineian
I prefer the b/w, my eyes are pulled right to the light at the back, in the color the no smoking sign gets my attention 1st. A second shot, closer to the back would have been good along with this one.

  • Otter
USMA said it best, the b&w is better because of the no smoking sign. I caught my attention in the color version and I never really noticed it the first time in the b&w. The colors were beautiful though.

Well typically I would choose black and white... but I like this one in color.

  • chef009
I was going to also say the thing about it looking sepia as it was opening...but I was beat to it again..oh, I guess I did say it anyway....I feel better. I like them both...but, I kind of wanted to see the floor.....always leave them wanting more.

  • loweho
B&W for me, Tom, the lack of floor didn't bother me, didn't notice it until everyone mentioned it, I was too busy eyeballing the arching girder system. I think the low placement forces you to go back up into the frame and look around.

    - Fickle Finger of F8

  • tomnorth
The reason I didn't include the floor is because it was covered with people. I felt the crowd would have distracted from the building and the shafts of light. Ideally I'd get the picture when the place was empty. That would be fun.

    - One size does not fit all

Neat shot, I like both ways for different reasons, I do agree with Penny and Lidljo, more and less of the picture. :o)
