I thought about re-posting my story Fuji-San for this challenge, but I decided that I have many photos that might depict endurance that I have not shared. I have seen things in the middle east that require endurance, or just endure. If you lived where air conditioning was only for the rich, and temperatures reach above 100 degrees F. daily, could you Popup Linkwork as a Popup Linkblacksmith or a Popup Linkbaker? There is a 400 yr. old Popup Linkmesquite tree that lives in the middle of the desert, and no one knows where it gets its water. There is a Popup Link700 yr. old fort being Popup Linkexcavated and rebuilt. Another Popup Linkstructure, this one 1200 yrs old was discovered near by. What do American sailors do to endure 6 months floating in the middle of the Arabian Gulf? Popup LinkBBQ! With some Popup Linkoutdoor activities to work up that Popup Linkappetite!

  • Great story! The mesquite tree is good. It must have one heck of a root system. Been to many "steel beach" parties. Try one on top of a submarine! HaHa USN (Ret)

  • Yep, my brother was in the gulf on a carrier and told the horrors of the heat and we live were it is over 100 all summer. I like the tree shot best for the simple structure of it.

  • Nice post on the theme. The one bit of feedback I have is to fill the frame with more of your subject. The saying goes, if it's not good enough, you're probably not close enough. For example, on blacksmith, I would have loved to have seen a close-up of the guy working the metal with the glow of the coals. Food for thought.

  • Great post! Brought back a lot of memories for this sweep sailor. Don't know if the attitude about cameras has changed in the 17 years since I was in Bahrain and that neighborhood, so be careful with it on the beach, Really loved the Smithy shots!
