GFD Open House Car Fire Demonstration - 2007

One of the demonstrations at the open house this year was extinguishing a car fire. The car was filled with wood pallets and the street was flooded with foam prior the the ignition. The pallets were ignited and allowed to build to a rather good fire before the firefighters moved in to fight the fire.

I was shooting from behind the crowd while holding my camera at arms length above my head. I think I aimed it fairly well.

Wonderful slideshow, your aim was right on. However, if you continue shooting in that position, you should move up to a camera with a flip back.

Super photo journalism, Don! Taking pics "overhead" like that isn't easy; I've done it before. You did well. I have a question: do they only burn cars that have no gas in them? I'd be afraid of an explosion...........

Kay... Not only no gasoline, but no gas tank. An empty tank is actually more dangerous than a full tank. Also, the battery had been removed.

Nice set of images, Don. I would have liked to see them cropped closer or taken with a zoom to get more detail. That's me though. Again, well done, bud.

Nice shots. It's a good reminder to be sure you've removed the gas tank and battery before you let your car catch fire. So many people forget these two simple steps... These firemen went an extra mile by removing the car's door first. I don't think that's very practical - besides, it's harder to do by yourself. (I nice picture of a "boom" would have been exciting. But, alas, no boom.)
