The following pictures were taken in San Diego last week. With all of the wild fires taking place the smoke presents some very unique opportunities. My prayers are with the families that have to endure these devastating fires.

The first was taken from Shelter Island looking towards San Diego in the morning.

The second is looking West towards the sunset taken the day before. It is a HDR composite in which the flag was processed to be brighter that what the background exposure would have allowed.

All comments and critiques are appreciated.

Include my prayers with yours for all those affected by this tragedy also. Amazing the beauty from so much devastation, Fantastic shots.

  • I really like morning, beautiful shot, the smoke makes it more interesting. Sunset is nice also but the flag almost looks super imposed to me, but I still like it!

Morning is my favorite of these, Fabulos, I like the layered look to fog (or smoke) shots.

  • Morning is a wonderful photograph, but it is sad to think its beauty is partially supplied by the tragedy of the fires. Nice work.

I went into San Diego on Sunday when the fires first started. From the plane ride in I could see one fire that had plume that was stretching about 10-15 miles to San Diego. By evening the city was getting pretty hazy and you definitely could smell the smoke. I started to realize the magnitude of the fire when it reached places like Rancho Santa Fe and San Marcos (about 20-30 min North). The San Diego area then started to become paralyzed by the closure of I-15 and then I-5. The week was cut short and I left late Wed night. During the day, I visited a customer in Chula Vista (South towards SG's stomping grounds)the smoke was pretty heavy and literally there were ashes on the car when I left about 1.5 hr later. I felt relatively safe the whole time but it was pretty sad to think about the pure mass of people having to flee their homes including those that were awakened at 4:30 AM to a reverse 911 call for a mandatory evacuation. On the photography side it does present an interesting weather phenomena. The night after the palm picture the sun and sky had some intense colors. I was stuck in a group and was not able to take any pictures. I went to Ocean Beach on Wed and the sun was darkened behind the smoke before it was bale disappear behind the horizon. This link is to a photographer that I talked to on the beach. Has has some great photos. http://www.kneed4speed.com/10_24_07-1/index.htm .

Morning is a wonderful image. We are seeing some of the smoke drifting all the way up here in NorCal. The air quality is much worse than it usually is. They were calling for rain today, but it never happened. I have a vendor down in SD who I spoke with today who has no idea where half of her office staff are. She said people are just displaced all over the place. Fires are a way of life out here in CA, but this year seems much worse than it's been for quite a long while. I just hope we have a wet winter.

Morning is excellent, the kind of image that one likes to spend some time with. Brings to mind my first look at San Diego in 1943, as a kid from Texas, I was mystified by how the day could get off to cool, grey, damp mornings and change to perfect weather by noon. Thanks to your posts, perhaps we can get used to SG's absence from the area, not that we won't miss him, but I think you can stand his watch.

  • How are you able to do an HDR of an object that moves? I'v had problems with trees and clouds moving in the wind. I really like both shots!
