I found the cutest dog while photographing at a Lady's house a while back.  She was sweet and had so much personality I couldn't help but take a few shots.

Everybody, meet Sophie.

For some reason, the water in the background distracts me...other than that he shots are awesome. I love the thumb.

I was thinking that last night when I was adjusting the contrast. I dunno... maybe the color looks good with the water. sophie color sophie color 2 sophie color 3 sophie color 4

I thought the water in the background was a distraction, too. I think the b&w is a little dark for her facial features. She looks so peaceful. :o)

  • tbell
I like the closeup. Is she carrying a mini SLR around her neck? Also, how do you add uploads to a comment?

Nice job on Sophie 4 and the thumb. Sophie 2 and 3 would be great without the water (try cropping them) and Sophie is also good, but you're too far away. If the dog is the subject, then you need to try to fill the frame a little bit more with her. I really like the expression on her face in Sophie.

I like the colour ones as well. I think they look really neat!

No, I'm not sure what it was tbell. We went to the house to get pictures of their yard and pond and next thing we knew, we had a buddy. And I'm going to defend my pictures a little here. I like the water... at least in 1 & 3. I think it adds an extra element to the overall composition. It adds a place to where the subject is at the time and allows the subject to "visually breath" as my teacher would say. I understand in 2 that there not being a lot of water in the frame, and just the small bit in the top left is definitely distracting and I should have cropped that out. The shallow DOF helps to make her stand out in the b/g while the b/g adds contrast to the picture since she's completely white. Anyway, my two cents. Not saying your's aren't worth any (i agree on 2). (And I didn't include the thumb in the original post because I missed the focus... it's not exactly on her eyes and that distracted/irritated me).

I like Sophie, water and all. I agree with EMF it adds to the image in B&W.

To show I'm still a good sport (even after my little rant): sophie bw crop sophie bw 2 crop sophie bw 3 crop And upon review... I still agree with what I said earlier, but I see that there's some merit to your advice ;-) Just personal opinions :-D

The crops help a lot...cute dog. The collar thing is one of two things. It could be a wireless fence collar, or a stop barking trainer ....in both cases they either, give a little shock or a spray to train them to stop.

I like that you chose to post the pup in b&w...I agree the water and collar thing is a bit distracting...The thumb is my favorite...Sophie is a cutie...

    - Have a nice day...

I didn't mind the water in the first one. I actually like it. I like them in B&W better. I also really like the thumb

    I agree with Penny!

Love the look back in the first shot. Nice contrast.

    - One size does not fit all

The cropped versions are more stronger compositions, IMO. Especially 3...it makes it a whole new image.

I agree with Tom about the look back in the first shot. And I also thought that the water was a little distracting......so if you don't mind I quickly played with your image and did what I love about Digital images.. I know they won't have the same feel, but here are two different looks at the same shot with other backgrounds. If you want me to I will delete these images and I will ask an editor to delete this post...just for fun here they are...dog in country dog in hawaii
